PhD student, Uppsala University's interdisciplinary graduate school in sustainable development (Sustainable destination development)

The Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering consist of three divisions: Quality Science, Industrial Engineering and Management and Civil Engineering and Built Environment. The department has approximately 80 employees and has its research and education both at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland. The division for Industrial Engineering focuses on research and education on different aspects of industrial development. The dynamics of the innovative process, product development, innovation management, entrepreneurship, industrial management and organisation, and business development are a few of our main areas.

Uppsala University is establishing a new graduate school in sustainable development. The main mission of the graduate school is to conduct research based on key social challenges, where local relevance meets international excellence. The research will include changed energy systems, sustainable consumption and destinations development, and will address significant issues such as conservation and change, as well as the definition and management of resources. The graduate school is rooted in ongoing interdisciplinary collaborations in research and education, conducted in an international environment. Uppsala University Campus Gotland, where the graduate school is located, is a hub for the University's research and education in sustainability. We work with international partners, visiting researchers and local players with a special focus on knowledge development to cope with the changes needed to live well during climate change. As a PhD student, you will be part of this interdisciplinary research environment. You will also benefit from the courses, seminars and first-class doctoral supervision offered at the graduate school.

Duties/Project description: This PhD project deals with Sustainable destination development, a field of research that with a strong sustainability perspective and systems´ thinking explores how destinations both can contribute to and be affected by sustainable visits and sustainable visitor places. Within the PhD school this will be explored in three projects with different specializations. Our project will focus entrepreneurship and innovation.

To this end, we are now looking for a PhD student within the field of Engineering physics, specialisation in industrial engineering, employed at the division of Quality management, with a focus on sustainable destination development. Applicants have the possibility to suggest their own projects, with a research plan with a focus of your own choice, but we are also happy to see applications with a focus on entrepreneurship and innovation for partnerships for sustainable destination development.

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Requirements: Master degree in sustainable destination development or equivalent. Applications shall in addition to copy of diploma and grades include a description of research interests, a tentative research plan and personal letter, CV, and references or recommendation letter. The application process has two steps, first the merits of the applicants will be judged, and the applicants will be called to an interview.

Additional qualifications: We think you are genuinely interested in sustainability from an interdisciplinary perspective. Maybe you have your background in sustainability and now want to specialise in destination development. Maybe you have a background in destination development and tourism, which you now want to develop more sustainably. Knowledge about and experiences from sustainability, internationalisation, interdisciplinarity, and collaboration with companies, organisations and authorities is meriting. Good ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is also meriting.

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programs if he or she:

has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
