The Department of Archeology and Antiquity is a multi-disciplinary institution that has a fruitful cooperation between the disciplines involved. At the department there is teaching and research in the subjects of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archeology, Osteology, Egyptology and Global Environmental History. The department is located in both Uppsala and Visby (Campus Gotland). Egyptology is included as a natural part of our bachelor’s program and in the research environment. Duties/Project description: The department now announces a fully funded position in one of the subjects Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archaeology or Egyptology, where the holder will be an active member of the Engaging Vulnerability (EV) research program at Uppsala University.

EV is a decade-long multidisciplinary research program (2015–2025) financed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) with support from the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic funds and the Faculty of Arts at Uppsala University. The goal of the program is to conduct empirical research and develop theoretical perspectives of engaging vulnerability as a productive resource rather than as a lack or privation. During the autumn of 2020, research within the program will include work in anthropology, comparative literature, design studies, ethnology, media and communications, film studies, philosophy, political studies, gender studies, philosophy, and rhetoric.  Information about the program can be found at http://www.engagingvulnerability.se.

The EV-program open up for dissertation projects on a very broad range of possible research questions and empirical areas. However, the application must explain clearly how the proposed project can contribute to the overall aims of the EV-program.

Requirements: Basic qualifications are seen as a) having passed a degree at advanced level; b) completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 at an advanced level; c) have approved results at first-level courses of at least 90 higher education credits in archeology and classical archaeology and ancient history respectively – for egyptology, 120 credits are required. Competent is also the one who, in another order within or outside the country, acquired essentially equivalent knowledge. For special qualifications, the applicant is required to meet the requirements for the advanced level of the relevant postgraduate education subject. 

Position: Successful candidates will pursue their doctoral studies full-time in Uppsala and are expected to participate actively in weekly seminars and workshops, etc. at the department and within the research program.

The position is a 4-year full-time employment which qualifies for all Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20 % of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally).

Application: Your application can be written in English or Swedish and should include: 1) a brief CV, outlining your academic progress to date, 2) a copy of your MA thesis, 3) a statement (of no more than 1500 words) outlining your proposed research. This outline should describe your research question, how it is related to the current state of research and its relevance to the EV-program. The outline should also have a short discussion of possible sources for answering your question and methodological considerations regarding the potential of these sources, 4) an authorized copy of your Master’s degree and course grades, 5) name and e-mail addresses of at least two referees. 

Assessment criteria: Only applications whose project plan is relevant based on the research program Engaging Vulnerability will be considered for assessment. The ranking of the applicants is then based primarily on the quality of the master's thesis and, secondly, on the basis of the project plan. Interviews of applicants may be relevant.
