The Centre for Gender Research was established in 2003 as an interdisciplinary unit within Uppsala University with a focus on gender research. We are placed within the Disciplinary Domain of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts, but our research and education includes both social and biological perspectives on sex/gender. We have over thirty researchers doing research that spans all disciplinary domains. We offer courses and study programmes on undergraduate and advanced level. The Department of Game Design was established in 2013, through the merger of Gotland University and Uppsala University. Game development and game design education and research had been conducted at the former Gotland University for about ten years prior to the merger. The department currently offers four Bachelor degree programmes: BA Game Design and Graphics, BA Game Design and Programming, BA Game Design and Project Management, and BA Game Design. A Master’s programme in Game Design started during autumn 2019. The department additionally offers independent courses in game design, graphics, and game programming. Research within the department focuses on fundamental issues relevant to the field of game design.

Duties/Project description:
The PhD programme entails four years of full-time work and fully financed employment as PhD candidate (Sv. doktorand). The PhD candidate will be working full time. Additional service at the Centre for Gender Research and/or the Institute for Game Design regarding administrative and/or educational work may apply (max 20%); if so, this prolongs the duration of the PhD programme with the corresponding time. The places of work are Uppsala (appr. 75%) and Visby (appr. 25%) according to a set, agreed-upon time plan. The general orientation of the thesis project for this PhD position should be within the broadly defined area of gender, games and society, with a focus on either sociocultural aspects of game design, or games for growth.

Eligibility
For basic eligibility for the position, you need to have completed a degree at advanced (Masters) level, based on course study of no less than 240 credits, and with no less than 60 of these credits at the advanced level. Eligibility also applies to those who have acquired the equivalent of such education in Sweden or abroad. For special eligibility, the applicant must have a degree in Gender Studies at the BA or MA level. Those also have special eligibility who have acquired education in other subjects with a gender studies orientation. Acquired credits in Game Design or equivalent is a merit. Applicants must have documented very good language skills in spoken and written English. Good Swedish skills are a merit.

Application:
Your application should be written in English. It should contain your Curriculum Vitae, copies of degree certificate and grades, Master’s thesis, and possible publications. It must also contain a personal letter (max. 2 pages) describing: (A) the reason(s) why you want to pursue a PhD; (B) the reason(s) why you want to pursue a project and education that combines the areas Gender Studies and Game Design; and (C) any previous research experience. Furthermore, your application must include a brief project outline (max 5 pages, including bibliography), describing the thesis project you will want to pursue, within one of the areas mentioned above. It is vital that the project outline combines research questions and perspectives relevant to these areas, with reference to both gender and games. Include contact information for at least two references, preferably academic. Interviews and work samples will be part of the selection process. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
