Uppsala University, Department of English

The Department of English is announcing a permanent appointment in Irish. We seek a dynamic researcher and teacher who is willing to work in an interdisciplinary environment. The Department of English is comprised of five areas of research and teaching specialization: English language and linguistics, English Literature, American Literature, Irish language and literature and American Studies. The Department of English has taught Celtic languages since 1941 and has well-established institutional contact with Irish Universities and with the field of Celtic languages across Europe and beyond. Research interests in the department more broadly include research in migration, colonial and post-colonial studies, and in language contact (specifically with regard to heritage languages in the United States).

Duties: Teaching Irish language and literature, research, administration and duties involving collaboration with wider society. Teaching duties include examination, course responsibility, and course administration. Online and distance teaching may be included. Other duties may include the teaching of Anglo-Irish literature and Irish history, culture and politics. In order to participate actively in departmental and faculty work, the holder of the position will be expected to be present at the workplace. While teaching and supervision will occur in English, any appointee who is not proficient in Swedish at the start of employment will be expected to acquire a good working knowledge of the language within two years.

Eligibility: To be eligible for employment as a Senior Lecturer, the applicant must have a PhD or have attained a corresponding level of research competence in Irish language or literature; be able to demonstrate teaching expertise; be able to teach in fluent Irish and English; and possess the personal characteristics required to meet the demands of the position well.

Eligible applicants will have completed pedagogical training in higher education (or have acquired equivalent pedagogical skills through other means). Should a successful applicant lack such training, s/he will be expected to complete such training within the two first years of employment.

The research competence, pedagogical abilities and work experience of the applicant must be relevant for the duties of the appointment.

Assessment criteria: In ranking of eligible applicants, equal weight will be accorded to teaching and research expertise.

Teaching expertise: Teaching expertise refers to educational and teaching experience. In the assessment of teaching ability, teaching quality will be prioritized. The extent, breadth and depth of teaching experience will be considered. Furthermore, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching and education and the ability to relate teaching to current research in the field as well as to the teaching of teacher students and university pedagogy, will be considered advantageous. Experience in teaching on online courses is a merit.

Experience in teaching in any of the following areas will be particularly advantageous:

  • Old Irish or other Celtic Languages
  • Language contact between Irish and English
  • Irish as heritage language in the Irish diaspora
  • Anglo-Irish Literature

Teaching skills must be documented in a manner that allows their quality to be assessed.

Research expertise: Research expertise refers to research qualifications and publications in the field of Irish language or literature. In the assessment of research expertise, research quality in the disciplinary field will be prioritized. The extent, breadth and depth of research output will also be considered. The ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and doctoral supervision, as well as a success record in obtaining competitive external research funding are considered. The ability to collaborate in interdisciplinary work, as well as with broader society, is advantageous.

Good interpersonal skills and a documented ability to cooperate with colleagues is very important. Previous experience of administration will be afforded weight.

All experience must be documented so that both quality and scope can be assessed.

Other: Parental leave, familial leave, union work, military service or related activities are considered alongside work experience and are to be included in the curriculum vitae. Personal factors (for example, parental leave) may positively impact on the overall assessment and, as such, should be included in the applicant’s account of their merits and experience. When necessary, Uppsala University offers courses in Swedish for new employees.

In appointing a person to this academic post, priority will be given to the applicant who, after a holistic assessment of competence and skills, is judged, alongside documented qualifications, to possess the greatest potential for performing and further developing the relevant duties and for advancing the subject area.

Application procedure: The application must be submitted through the Uppsala University recruitment system (Varbi). The application should be written in English or Swedish and must comprise:

  • A letter of application
  • A Curriculum Vitae
