Uppsala University, Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The Division of Nanotechnology and Functional Materials is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering with the main activities at The Ångström Laboratory. The research at the division focuses on five main areas, 1) Nanosecurity and biocompatibility, 2) Nanocellulose for biomedical applications, 3) Diagnostics with magnetic nanoparticles 4) Mesoporous materials and 5) Sustainable electrical energy storage.

Temporary position 12 months starting 2020-04-01 or as otherwise agreed.

Description: At the Division of Nanotechnology and Functional materials we are developing batteries made from organic building blocks (H, C, N, O, etc.). As such batteries contain only elements that are included in the natural life cycles they can be easily disposed of after end-of-life by combustion without release of harmful elements. This makes organic batteries ideal for integration with consumer products that are traditionally sorted as combustible waste. With support from FOV fabrics we have developed an all-organic battery with water-based electrolyte and we are going to develop this battery further to a device that can be readily integrated into fabrics. The current position is to coordinate these efforts between FOV fabrics and the research team and to execute the necessary steps to produce an all-organic textile battery. The announced position is part of the work towards sustainable electrical energy storage.

Duties: The work covers a wide spectrum of activities: Synthesis of organic electroactive materials based on methods previously developed in the research group, development of layering methods to deposit carbon current collectors as well as active electrode materials onto fabric substrates, assembly and sealing of complete battery cells with textile casings, taking part in formulating requirements for fabric substrates and casings, battery testing, and coordinating the work between FOV fabrics and the research team.

Requirements: Master degree or equivalent in chemistry or nearby area as well as documented experience in organic synthetic chemistry.

We require good oral proficiency in English.

Additional qualifications: You must have excellent collaboration- and communication skills and be interested in working in the borderline between industry and research. Personal qualities such as a strong motivation for quality improvement and performance and the ability to lead and run projects while interacting with researchers as well as coworkers outside your field of experience are very important.

Instructions for application: The application should contain a description of previous experience on organics synthesis, CV, publication list, copies of diplomas and other relevant documents. We would like you to provide reference information or attach a letter of recommendation.
