Uppsala University, Department of Peace and Conflict Research

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer Courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and at present some 300-400 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit http://www.pcr.uu.se.

The department is now looking for 1-2 research assistants to work on the below two research projects (time split 50/50);

  • ViEWS – a political Violence Early-Warning System (Project leader Håvard Hegre). ViEWS started up in January 2017 with funding from the European Research Council and will run through 2021. The project applies statistical methods to estimate the probabilities of the three types of violence coded by the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP). ViEWS provides monthly assessments on the risk of violence in Africa. The project is described in detail at http://www.pcr.uu.se/research/views/.

  • Protest, Democratization, and Escalation to Large-scale Political Violence (project leader Espen Geelmuyden Rød). The project started up in 2019 with funding from the Swedish Research Council. The research project focuses on the conditions under which protest movements escalate into large-scale political violence or lead to democratization. Expected tasks:
The tasks include collection of data, routine administrative/project management tasks, workshop assistance and miscellaneous writing tasks. The research assistants will report to the project leaders, and work closely with other research assistants and researchers within the two projects. The role may also include other adminstration.


Qualifications and required skills
:

  • Since the assistants will work with quantitative methods, which is taught at master level, a master degree in Peace and Conflict studies, or in a related field is a demand
  • Knowledge of software such as R, and/or Latex
  • Good overview of the field of peace & conflict research
  • Excellent proficiency in English (reading, writing)
  • Experience with writing concise and informative literature reviews, with high standards for detailed documentation and attribution of sources
  • Attention to detail and exactness, analytical and problem-solving skills, and good interpersonal abilities are of high importance.


Other/merits:

  • Previous experience with data collection (coding)
  • Knowledge of programming (python)
  • knowledge of UCDP and experience of web-presentations and CMS.
