Uppsala University, Department of Education

The Department of Education (EDU) conducts research, offers several third-cycle (doctoral) study programs and first and second level (bachelor, master) programs within the subjects of curriculum studies, education, and sociology of education. EDU also has extensive educational involvement in programs such as the Teaching program and the Human Resource program. EDU has more than 280 employees with approximately 185 teachers/researchers, 70 doctoral students and 25 administrators. More information about the department is available at www.edu.uu.se

The science of Education aims to develop knowledge of the processes, both formal and informal, through which people are formed and changed in different social, cultural and institutional contexts, such as preschool, school, family, leisure time, working life and higher education. Education is concerned with different aspects of upbringing, formation, education, learning, teaching and the prerequisites for and implementation of other social processes. It also concerns aspects of diversity. Questions investigated include, for example, how and why different forms of values, knowledge and skills arise, are maintained and change among and between generations, groups and individuals.

As a PhD student you will mainly be working within the framework of one of the following research groups in Education:

Studies in Childhood, Learning and Identities as Interactional Practices (CLIP) studies social interaction, learning, and identity processes with a specific interest in the study of children’s and young people’s everyday life, social relations and learning in preschool and school, digital practices, multilingualism, mobility and spatiality. The research also encompasses the perspectives of professionals, learning in professional education and workplace interaction.

Pedagogics and Special Needs (PS) is focusing on central questions related to inclusion and support measures, especially within the framework of school and preschool. The research encompasses theoretical analyses and conceptual investigations, broad empirical surveys, as well as analysis of and interventions in specific learning environments.

STEP – Comparative Curriculum Studies (STEP-CCS) performs research on governing, management and leadership, assessment and evaluation of policy and educational practices, spanning from preschool to higher education and working life. The studies are grounded in internationally established curriculum and governance theories, comprising institutional, comparative, historical and spatial analyses of different kinds of education arenas.

More information about the research groups in Education can be found at the department website: https://edu.uu.se/research/education/. In this call for applications, projects related to the PS-group will be prioritized.
