Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

One of the most challenging problems in contemporary physics is to understand the strong force that binds together quarks and gluons into hadrons, e.g. protons and neutrons. Hadron physics is a wide, dynamic research field where the strong interaction is investigated. The research of the Uppsala hadron physics group is carried out within international collaborations at facilities in China (BESIII, Beijing) and Germany (PANDA at FAIR), and in close collaboration with local theoreticians. An overview of the research activities available at http://www.physics.uu.se/research/nuclear-physics/.

The main physics interests of the Uppsala group are studies of the production and decay of hyperons. Hyperons are three-quark systems like the protons but where one or several of the light quarks are replaced by one or several heavier quarks, e.g. strange quarks. Hyperons give insights into the strong interaction at low energies and help us in the search for processes beyond the Standard Model. The future antiproton facility PANDA at FAIR has unique possibilities to study several different aspects of hyperons. Until the full PANDA is taken into operation, interesting studies of hyperon structure can be performed in the predecessor, the FAIR Phase 0 experiment PANDA@HADES.

This PhD student will participate in the collection and analysis of the first data from PANDA@HADES, with focus on hyperon Dalitz decays and radiative decays. The PhD student is expected to participate in meetings and workshops abroad and work with simulations, reconstruction , analysis and interpretation of data, as well as experimental service tasks.

Qualifications: The candidate shall have completed her/his MSc studies in physics (or equivalent), preferably with an orientation towards nuclear and/or particle physics. Basic knowledge in programming is required, as well as good oral and written proficiency in English and the capability to work both independently and in a team.

Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, CV, copies of certificates and diplomas, MSc thesis (or a draft thereof), a reference list and other documents, that the applicant wishes to claim.
