The Department of Chemistry-BMC includes the research programs in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry and Organic Chemistry, and is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department is geographically located at the Uppsala Biomedical Centre (BMC), a campus for scientific research and education in biology, chemistry, medicine and pharmacy. Nearby campuses enable interaction with many additional disciplines and an excellent innovation office is close to provide support from patent to commercialization and external collaboration. Around 100 people work at the department, of which about 30 are doctoral students and more than 10 are full professors.

The program of Analytical Chemistry has a strong emphasis on mass spectrometry and bioanalytical measurements, from elemental to macromolecular analysis, including environmental analysis and colloid chemistry. Research within the program is known worldwide to push analytical techniques beyond state-of-the-art in sample preparation strategies, surface analysis developments, untargeted omics, and dissolved organic matter analysis. The program also includes a facility for proteomics with top equipment to provide novel data to customers from academia and industry.

The Faculty of Science and Technology at Uppsala University offers one of Sweden’s best educations in chemistry and attracts both Swedish and international students. The Department of Chemistry – BMC is responsible for the Bachelor and Master programs in Chemistry at Uppsala University together with colleagues at the Department of Chemistry – Ångström, and the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering together with the Faculty of Pharmacy. The department provides courses and parts of courses to other education programs, both within and outside the faculty. Our educational programs have a wide range of courses at all levels, strong research connections, extensive laboratory exercises, and excellent teachers implementing and developing the latest pedagogic methods.

Description of Subject Area: Analytical Chemistry, with a focus on development and innovation.

Duties: The position includes teaching, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students. The holder shall also keep abreast of developments within the subject area and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. Further responsibilities may be part of the duties.

Qualifications Required: According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as Associate Professor are persons who have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise. It is necessary that the pedagogical skills, the research expertise and the professional skills are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment.

According to the appointment regulations of Uppsala University to be eligible for appointment as Associate Professor applicants also must have completed teacher training of relevance to operations at the University, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances apply, this training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first two years of employment. A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.

Documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking

Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, of which weight will be primarily given to research expertise. Research expertise comprises research merits including research merits obtained outside the academy, which includes for example technology development and innovation ability. In assessing research expertise, special weight will be attached to research merits in analytical chemistry, broadly defined, including, but not limited to, omics, chemometrics, inorganic analysis, microfluidics and biosensors.

High consideration will be given to the applicants' ability for innovation within her/his research area as well as on the applicant's ability to address major scientific problems, as demonstrated through research. Further, consideration will be given to the applicant being active within a field of research with high developmental and potential for innovations. Conducting research at a high international level with an excellent publication record, proven ability to attract external research funding in their chosen field of Analytical Chemistry and involvement in successful collaborations, must be afforded high consideration.

In assessing research expertise, research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. This expertise can have been achieved outside the academy through supervision, internal training, mentoring programs, etc.

In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to merits showing the capacity to integrate recent advances in Analytical Chemistry into undergraduate and graduate courses.

Management Expertise: Management expertise is important and will be afforded high consideration. Management expertise is demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise. Experience and proven ability to build and lead a successful and well-managed research group must be the prime consideration. We emphasize the importance of personal suitability for this position.

Collaboration Expertise: Collaboration expertise is important and will be afforded high consideration. Collaboration expertise is demonstrated through capacity to conduct research across disciplinary boundaries with translational research goals.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.
