Uppsala universitet, institutionen för ekologi och genetik

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se. A position as postdoctoral researcher are now available at the program Plant Ecology and Evolution.

Project description: Understanding the genetic architecture of adaptation is of paramount importance to be able to, for instance, predict trait evolution under environmental change. The development of next generation sequencing (NGS) has just begun to shed light on the complexity of the genetic architecture of quantitative traits. However, one major issue with genome-wide approaches is that they usually focus on point mutations, whereas structural rearrangements have received limited attention. Yet, the rate of gene duplications per generation is of the same magnitude or even higher than the substitution rate. Coniferous species being of economic interest, a lot of genomic resources were produced during the last decades in both western Europe and northern America. These species are also known to show strong pattern of local adaptation and their genome is enriched in paralogous genes. By compiling already-existing genomic resources, the project aims at studying the role of structural variants in adaptation and convergent evolution.

Tasks: By compiling already-existing genomic resources, the project aims at studying the role of structural variants in adaptation and convergent evolution. The postdoctoral fellow will be responsible for downloading, analyzing and curating already available -omics and biological data. The applicant will also be responsible for the statistical and population genetics analyses of the data and for drafting the resulting manuscripts.

Qualifications required: For this position the candidate must hold a PhD degree within Evolutionary Biology, Population Genetics, Bioinformatics or a related field. Skills in -omics data analysis is a requirement. Candidates must be able to express themselves well in spoken and written English.

To be eligible the candidate must have a PhD degree, or a foreign degree equivalent to this, completed less than three years before the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Qualifications desired: Especielly desired is if the candidate should master the main concepts in Evolutionary Biology and a good background in population genetics/genomics and the statistical analysis of genomic data. Skills in programing/modelling would be considered a merit.

Position: Temporary full-time position for 24 months, according to central collective agreement.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: January 2020 or as otherwise agreed.

Instructions for the application: The application should include 1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and motivation of why you want to work as a postdoctoral researcher/fellow and why you are suitable for the position, 2) a complete CV, 3) a copy of your PhD degree and a copy of your thesis, 5) name and contact information to at least two reference persons (e-mail address and phone no.). The application should be written in English.
