The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University (www.igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile with strong research groups focused on cancer, autoimmune and genetic diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently conducted in the following areas: medical and clinical genetics, clinical immunology, pathology, neuro-oncology, vascular biology, radiation science and molecular tools. Department activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Akademiska sjukhuset, Uppsala. The department has teaching assignments in several education programmes, including Master Programmes, at the Faculty of Medicine, and in a number of educations at the Disciplinary Domain of Science and Technology. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 400 million, out of which more than half is made up of external funding. The staff amounts to approximately 340 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 600 affiliated people.

Work description: Researcher in the area of pharmaco-transcriptomics and functional genomics, responsible for key parts of the execution of an ongoing research program (supported by SSF and Barncancerfonden) in nervous system cancer therapy. The project is aimed at understanding how drug molecules affect gene expression in patient-derived cells, through a combination of high-throughput (384- and 96-well-based) RNA sequencing technology, bioinformatics, cell experiments and animal experiments. The research involves advanced use of robotic, (e.g. nano-liter volume) instrumentation, non-standard adaptation of new RNA sequencing strategies derived from single-cell sequencing, and the design and execution of molecular studies of candidate targets by candidate gene interference in experimental models established in the lab (cells, zebrafish embryonic xenografts). Reflecting the cross-disciplinary structure of the lab, some of these tasks are performed in collaboration with other team members and external partners. The employment involves also co-supervision of master and doctoral students. The position involves some teaching, particularly lectures and supervision of bioinformatics exercises in the IGP Master’s program.

Qualifications: Documented advanced expertise in RNA sequencing (wet-lab), including single-cell methodology, SMART-Seq2, DRUG-seq and PLATE-seq. Bioinformatics, particularly processing of both bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq data using cluster computing. Documented advanced expertise in molecular biology and cell models.
Documented experience in brain tumor biology. Documented experience in performing animal experiments in disease models. Documented high level of verbal/written English.

Merits: Documents experience in zebrafish models. Documented experience in mouse models.
