Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and sucessful biomolecular departments in Europe covering seven research programs in areas such as bioinformatics, microbiology and biophysics. We now offer a permanent position to work with advanced bioinformatics support within the framework of the National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS)/SciLifeLab, with a focus on evolutionary and population genomics.

Your future work assignments

Your tasks will consist of:

  • Advanced bioinformatics analyses within research projects across Sweden, including key involvement in a major research effort in conifer genomics.
  • Development of bioinformatics tools and workflows.
  • Educating other scientists in bioinformatics through collaboration within supported projects, teaching at national courses, and through participating in various networks.
  • Taking part in the continuous development of NBIS/SciLifeLab at a national level.

Data analysis within research projects is the primary task and will be carried out in collaboration with research groups at Swedish universities or industry. This work can range from shorter analysis tasks to deep collaborations within large nationally prioritized projects, where you would have the overall responsibility for the bioinformatics aspects.

Your future workplace You will work at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, at the Biomedical Center in Uppsala, Sweden. The National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (https://nbis.se) is a large national infrastructure in rapid development providing support, tools and training to the Swedish life science research community. NBIS comprises the SciLifeLab bioinformatics platform, and has more than 80 staff across Sweden, including more than 40 full-time senior bioinformaticians across Sweden working in our Support teams. As a Support team member, you will provide advanced bioinformatics analyses to some of the most scientifically exciting projects across Sweden. Examples of supported scientific areas range from translational medicine and complex diseases, to fundamental cell biology and evolutionary and environmental research. We are now expanding our capacity in evolutionary and population genomics, with a particular focus on conifer genomics.

The work will include some amount of travel to other sites, as knowledge exchange is a key aspect of our operation and development, to maintain cutting-edge expertise for analysis of current and emerging data types.

Your qualifications We are looking for candidates who has (i) a PhD or similar relevant working experience from advanced studies within bioinformatics, in academia or industry, (ii) proficiency in terminal-based work in a Linux environment and in at least one scripting language (e.g Python, Perl or R), (iii) fluent oral and written communication skills in English, and (iv) strong skills in cooperation and communication. You must also have experience from performing population genomics analyses.

Merits Postdoctoral studies are a strong merit but not a requirement. We believe that you have experience of advanced analysis in areas such as resequencing and variant calling, population genomics, GWAS, and comparative genomics. We also believe that you to have a keen interest in plant genomics and evolution. Experience of working with large datasets, and work with complex repetitive genomes is also a merit. Strong skills in experimental design and software development are also meriting. “Reproducible research” and “FAIR data” are central concepts to us.

Your application should contain:

  • CV with publication list.
  • A personal letter including a motivation for why you want to join this team.
  • Contact information to two references.
