The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, diverse, and distinguished molecular bioscience departments in Europe. The department comprises seven research programs with about 230 employees. Please read more at (http://www.icm.uu.se).
In Magnus Johansson's group (https://www.icm.uu.se/molecular-systems-biology/johansson-lab/) in the program for Molecular systems biology, the research is focused on the protein synthesis machinery. The group is developing fluorescence-based methods with emphasis on super-resolved single-molecule tracking, to study protein synthesis in living cells quantitatively.
Project description: The PhD project, which is part of a larger, ongoing project in the group, aims to define a quantitative model for the dynamics of the bacterial cell's molecular machinery for insertion into, and secretion through, the cell membrane. The project involves laboratory work on both cell and molecular levels, as well as a significant amount of mathematical modeling of complex reaction-diffusion relationships.
Duties: The Ph.D. student shall primarily focus on postgraduate studies, but other duties related to teaching and administrative work may be involved, up to a maximum of 20 % of the time. Information about doctoral education, eligibility requirements, and admission rules can be found at the faculty website, http://www. teknat.uu.se/utbildning/utbildning-pa-forskarniva/.
Requirements: The applicant must have a master's degree in Molecular Biotechnology, Biophysics or another subject which the employer considers being equivalent. Documented skills in programming and mathematical modeling, as well as laboratory work, are required. The applicant must also have an excellent ability to work independently as well as in a group. Good written and oral knowledge of English are prerequisites, as the work is conducted in an international environment.
