Postdoctoral Researcher/s for the ENGAGING VULNERABILITY research program - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

ENGAGING VULNERABILITY (EV) is a multidisciplinary research program funded for ten years (2015–2025) by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) with support from the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic funds, and the Faculty of Arts. The goal of the program is to conduct empirical research and develop perspectives that engage vulnerability as a productive resource rather than a lack or privation. Currently, research within the program is being carried out in the disciplines of anthropology, ethnology, philosophy, rhetoric, media and communication, comparative literature, design studies, musicology, and history of ideas.

The program is now seeking one to two post-docs, 100%, from September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2022. The successful applicant is expected to conduct research that contributes to and develops the issues that are the focus of the EV program. In order to be considered, the application must explain clearly how the proposed project constitutes a contribution to the overall aims of the EV program.

Duties: Duties include conducting research and teaching one course (or the equivalent) per semester, i.e. two courses per year. Research may be newly established and/or may consist of transforming an unpublished doctoral dissertation into a monograph published by a leading international publisher. The position includes administrative duties. The successful applicant is expected to participate actively in the program’s seminars and activities in Uppsala, be a resource for the program’s graduate students, and contribute to the development of a vibrant research environment. The successful applicant is therefore required to be in residence during the full length of all fall and spring semesters.

Requirements: To be qualified for this position, applicants must have obtained their doctoral degree no earlier than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. 

Assessment Criteria/Ranking: Assessment of the applications will be based primarily on the candidate's ability to conduct creative research of significant relevance to the EV program. For the purpose of evaluation, more emphasis will be placed on the quality and relevance of the scholarly work than on the number of publications. The ability to publish in relevant, high profile contexts is an important part of this position and evidence of such ability will be considered in the assessments.

The research field is open, and may be in the humanities, the social sciences and/or the natural sciences. Research may focus on people, animals, the environment and/or it can be about phenomena or theoretical perspectives that extend and deepen the way we might think about vulnerability in new ways. The position requires the ability to work independently, good interpersonal skills, the ability to establish academic contacts around the world, the ability to formulate research questions in a way that arouses international interest, the ability to publish in relevant scholarly forums, and the ability to convey the research questions and results to a wider audience. The position is administered by the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, but please read this paragraph carefully and note: the applicant does not have to be an anthropologist.
