The Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a Senior Research Engineer position to work with particle accelerators and instrumentation development. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the second largest department at Uppsala University with more than 360 employees and 11 different divisions, situated at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala. The department is hosting the FREIA Laboratory that performs research towards future particle accelerators, with special focus on the European Spallation Source (ESS), the High Luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN, the development of free-electron lasers (FEL), and the development of ultra-fast electron diffraction (UED) instrument in Uppsala.

The candidate is offered the possibility to work in an exciting modern research area in physics and will have opportunities to interact and collaborate with leading groups in experimental physics and engineering.

Project Description: The candidate will, in collaboration with other members of the FREIA Laboratory, work on the development of advanced accelerators and instrumentation in general, and specifically on the development of superconducting magnets and electron sources. The FREIA Laboratory is currently working on the high luminosity upgrade of the LHC (HL-LHC) and the development of driver accelerators for FEL and UED.

Work Description: Deliver engineering solutions satisfying the scientific requirements of superconducting magnets and electron sources used in advanced accelerators and instrumentation. Regular reporting of the different development steps, regular communication with specialists on the different topics, at Uppsala and at other laboratories, participation in the operation and evaluation of experiments at the FREIA Laboratory. Projects are organized on national and international level and require occasional travel.

Responsibilities:

  • Be part of the FREIA team and support the team in validation of superconducting magnets, calibrations and test setups.
  • Troubleshoot technical problems related to magnets and electron sources.
  • Produce concepts and prototype superconducting magnets and their cryostats.
  • Produce concepts and prototype electron sources.
  • Produce calculations to validate designs.
  • Present designs for peer and stakeholder review.
  • Present work both in writing and verbally to a wide range of audiences.
  • Procure on-demand manufactured items and in-stock components.

Prerequisites: The applicant must have a PhD degree in physics or related area. You shall demonstrate a drive and determination to achieve results, be open minded and flexible in relation to the type of work assigned. You shall take responsibility, shall prioritize and effectively accomplish multiple tasks, and have a genuine interest in research and technology.

The following experience and competency is required:

  • Experience in work with and knowledge in superconducting magnets.
  • Experience in work with and knowledge in electron sources.
  • Experience in work with multi-particle simulations
  • Good oral and written proficiency in English.

The following experience and competency is an advantage:

  • Experience in work with CST Microwave Studio and ROXIE.
  • Experience in work with ionizing radiation.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Good oral and written proficiency in Swedish.
