Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

The position is within the field of diamond semiconductor devices, solid state physics and electronic and spintronic properties of CVD diamond. Diamond possess extreme material properties and in particular many extreme properties as a semiconductor. It is now possible to manufacture films of high purity single crystalline diamond, which opens up the possibility to utilize these properties in future electronic and spintronic devices.

About the division: The Division of Electricity at the Department of Engineering Sciences, Uppsala University conducts research on electromagnetics, power electronics and renewable energy. The diamond group has a proven track record working on cutting-edge semiconductor technology with a number of publications in high impact journals.

Project description: The attractive material properties of diamond such as high band gap, high carrier mobilities, high thermal conductivity, high breakdown field strength, radiation hardness, etc., make it a very interesting semiconductor material. Recently, diamond has received great attention for applications in spintronics and valleytronics. This is because of the unique quantum mechanical properties of diamond, as well as the presence of defects, e.g. the N-V center, with extremely long spin coherence time.

Diamond is considered to be a unique material for future high power, high frequency, high temperature devices like high-power Schottky diodes, MESFETs etc for applications in power electronics, fast switching transistors and for spintronics. Designs and fabrication techniques different from conventional methods have to be employed to realize electronic devices based on thin film single crystalline chemical vapour deposited (SC-CVD) diamond. Diamond also has a huge potential to be used as detectors in high energy physics, detectors for UV and far UV radiation, radiation sensors for radiotherapy, neutron detectors etc.

Qualifications: We are looking for a strong candidate with a Masters degree in semiconductor physics or material physics with some experience in one or more of:

Solid state physics
Semiconductor device physics
Semiconductor material characterisation
Micro/Nano structures & technology

We also require high level of proficiency in English.

The proposed work consists of:
Fabrication and characterization of spin- and valleytronic test devices in diamond using state-of-the-art optical and electrical characterization techniques, modelling and computer simulations of devices and also material characterization of CVD diamond by various characterization techniques and improving methods for studying transport processes in diamond.
