Description of Subject Area: Medical neurobiology investigates how the nervous system develops and functions in health and disease. The teaching is at the medical, biomedical , physiotherapy, speech pathology and master’s program in biomedicine within the Department of Neuroscience. The teaching will be in the subject medical neurobiology defined as cell and neurobiology, developmental biology, neuroanatomy and neuroregeneration /neurodegeneration, all with relevance to the clinical activities within the department.

Duties: The duties include teaching, research and administration in the subject area. The teaching duties include teaching in basic and advanced level education, course administration and leadership as well as supervision of students at all educational levels.The duties include independently developing and leading a research group and to actively seek funding from external national and international research financiers. The research should be carried out using progressive and relevant methods to answer research questions with a high degree of novelty. The duties also include participating in the department's activities through, among other things, administrative assignments in committees, follow the development of own subject and social development in general.

Eligibility requirements: To be eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, the applicant must demonstrate both teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or the corresponding research competence. It is required that the pedagogical skills, the research competence and the professional skills are relevant to the subject area and to the duties of the employment.

Candidates must have completed teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances apply, this training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first two years of employment. Under Section 5 of the Appointment Regulations for Uppsala University, having the personal characteristics suitable to perform the duties of the post well, is a general eligibility requirement for teachers.The applicant must demonstrate documented ability to acquire research grants in competition during the last 3 years, to have post-doctoral experience, to have skills in third cycle supervision and research group leadership. The ability to acquire research grants is shown by having received grants in open national competition. Documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail.The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Assessment Criteria: Equal weight in the assessment will be assigned to both research expertise and teaching expertise in the subject.

In assessment of research expertise, scholarly quality will be the primary consideration together with the degree of independence. The clinical relevance, use of translational models in research and development of novel technology applied to physiological questions, will be meriting. The scope of the applicant’s research, especially in terms of breadth and depth, will be regarded as important. Consideration will be given to the applicant’s ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education. Also, the applicant´s capacity to acquire funding for research in competition; and demonstrated ability to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community will be considered. In assessment of teaching expertise, teaching quality will be the primary consideration. The scope of the applicant’s teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, will also be given consideration. Further, weight will be assigned to the applicant’s capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop teaching and instruction, and ability to connect research with teaching on the basis of research in the subject concerned, subject didactics and teaching and learning in higher education. Ability to interact with stakeholders in and outside the University concerning issues of academic teaching and learning is also included in teaching expertise. See also § 8 of RB.

When the University appoints new teachers, the applicants selected are those who, after qualitative all-round assessment of their proficiency and expertise, are deemed to have the best prospects of implementing and developing the work duties in question and of contributing to positive development of activities.

Assessment criteria; other proficiency; Expertise in the areas of management and in administration are important for the appointment and weight will be assigned to both. Attention will also be paid to the ability to collaborate within an organisation and with the wider community. Ability to cooperate with the community at large, and to inform others of research and development, will also be taken into account. The applicant’s parental leave, part-time work due to care of children or the like will count as qualifying work experience.
