The Department of Pharmacy has during recent years strived towards establishing this research field, which is viewed as a strategic research area. To dock into this area, the professorship is focused towards studies of poorly water-soluble drugs, in particular towards oral delivery of low molecular drugs and the interplay between drug molecule, excipients and physiological processes such as dissolution, solubility, absorption, transport mechanisms and elimination mechanisms. Furthermore, the professorship is directed towards computational modelling and simulation, contemporary formulation strategies and manufacturing methods to enable delivery of problematic substances.

Description of Subject Area: Molecular pharmaceutics includes mechanistic understanding of drug delivery and its relation to medicinal chemistry, physical chemistry, cell biology and material sciences. The research targets to identify enabling formulation strategies to deliver the right drug concentration to the right target tissue at the right time. The research field heavily relies on modelling and simulation (in silico and in vitro) to predict physiological processes.

Duties: Research, administration and management. Responsibilities also include teaching in the subject area at the first-, second- and third-cycles, mainly related to the study programs at the faculty. The duties also entail administration and management in close cooperation with the Department and the Faculty. Further, the person appointed professor is also expected to provide general information to the society about research and developmental work in the field.

Eligibility requirements: Under the Higher Education Ordinance (HEO Ch. 4 Sec. 3) applicants are eligible for employment as professor if they possess both research and teaching expertise. Under the Appointment regulation for Uppsala University (AR) section 5, a general eligibility requirement for teachers is that they have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well.

Furthermore AR section 32 states that research expertise must have been demonstrated by independent research work and by the fact that the applicant's activities maintain a high international and national standard. The applicant must have demonstrated expertise in planning, initiating, leading, and developing research, have demonstrated the capacity to obtain research funding in competition, and demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervising third-cycle students. The applicant's contributions to the international and national academic community must be assessed on the basis of, among other things, the quality and scope of his/her academic publications in publishing channels most relevant to the subject. Requirements for international merits must be assessed on the basis of the character and specific circumstances of the subject.

Teaching expertise must, according to AR section 33, have been demonstrated by educational and teaching qualifications in accordance with section 23. Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision in the first, second and third cycles. A prerequisite for having demonstrated teaching expertise is that applicants have completed teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If special circumstances apply, this training for teachers in higher education may be completed during the first two years of employment. The teacher training must also include third cycle supervision.

To be eligible for appointment the applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. If special circumstances apply, an applicant without the ability to teach in Swedish will be assumed to acquire said ability within two years.

Assessment Criteria: In filling this position, weight will be given primarily to research and teaching expertise in the field of pharmaceutics, and special weight will be given to research expertise.

In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community. Experience in research within molecular pharmaceutics with focus on orally delivered dosage forms is considered the most important merit. Weight will be given to international experience, as well as experience with leading and participating in national and international collaborative projects. A demonstrated ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary projects with researchers in related pharmaceutical and medical disciplines is an important merit. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise. See also GC section 4.

When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

Assessment criteria; other proficiency: Administrative expertise is considered of importance for the position and will be given weight. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality. Management expertise is considered of great importance for the position. According to AR, management expertise is demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise. The ability to interact with the wider community and the ability to inform about research and development will also be considered. See also GC section 6.
