Uppsala University, Department of Chemistry - Ångström Laboratory

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 200 employees and has a turnover of 200 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website.

Subject description/research project: Prussian blue is considered by many to be an “evergreen” compound due to its perpetual attraction for chemists and extremely broad usefulness in applications. Currently, Prussian blue and its analogues have found great potential as electrodes in rechargeable batteries. This broad usefulness is thanks to its structural and compositional flexibility. However, this flexibility also leads to many challenges due to the sensitive nature of the structure and composition making them difficult to control. The goal of the current project is to apply a rigorous approach to understanding how the synthesis, composition and structure of a number of Prussian blue analogues influences the electrochemical performance. This will be performed on two levels, firstly by investigating how the material grows and forms during synthesis using a range of in situ methods such as IR, raman, diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Secondly, material behaviour during battery operation will also be investigated in detail via in operando diffraction methods combined with extensive electrochemical testing. The project will involve a large portion of travel to international facilities such as the ISIS neutron facility and the Diamond synchrotron light source in the UK and the DESY synchrotron light source in Germany. There is also scope for collaboration with the start-up company Altris.

Work duties: The student is expected to perform the synthesis of a number of Prussian blue analogue materials, identifying key parameters which can be controlled and then systematically investigate the impact that these have on the structure and composition of the material. The student will also design cells enabling the characterisation of material formation in situ using a range of tools. Finally the student will perform extensive analysis of the compound using powder diffraction, mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, TGA, IR and Raman. This work will be supported by a postdoctal researcher experienced with Prussian blue analogues.

The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:

  • has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or
  • has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or
  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements:

  • degree or equivalent as above in chemistry
  • very good oral and written proficiency in English

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant, through his or her experience and skills, is deemed to have the abilities necessary for successfully completing the third cycle programme.

Additional requirements:

  • Experience with Prussian blue analogues is considered a plus but not essential

Terms of employment: The rules about PhD students are found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5 §§1-7 and the university's rules and guidelines.

Application procedure: The application should include a statement of research interest, CV, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis, published article or relevant materials, if available. Also, contact information of at least two reference persons should be included.
