Uppsala University, Department of Psychology

Project description: PhD position in Experimental Psychopathology.

Uppsala University, Department of Psychology, Emotion Psychology, Emotional Mental Imagery Lab (EMIL)

The overall focus of Emily Holmes´ research team is to develop science-driven interventions to improve psychological treatment after trauma. This goal is achieved through interdisciplinary research combining perspectives from experimental and clinical psychology. The PhD student will be involved in different projects bridging laboratory and clinical work. One focus of the PhD project may be on broadening existing laboratory experiments on mental imagery for example that use the trauma film paradigm as a trauma analogue to generate intrusive imagery and aim to further develop feasible ways to deliver simple cognitive interventions after trauma on a large scale. Thus, the successful applicant should have an interest in the mental imagery / trauma film paradigm and running experimental studies. Furthermore, it is hoped that the PhD student will be involved in different clinical projects. One of these clinical projects will investigate if a simple imagery-focused cognitive intervention can protect mental health in people who recently experienced psychological trauma (i.e. hospital patients in the emergency department). We are also interested in mechanistically driven interventions for people with older trauma memories (e.g. refugees, rape survivors). Therefore, prior experience in working with patients would be beneficial, as would experience of working in a team. The direction of initial experimental projects will be led by Holmes (with other team members), while it is hoped the PhD student will also formulate own research questions within the general focus of the research group at later stages.
