Assessment criteria

Scientific and pedagogical expertise

When selecting amongst eligible applicants, weight will be given to research expertise and to teaching expertise in equal measures.

In assessing research expertise, research quality within the subject of the announcement will be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily concerning depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. An applicant who has an advantage in terms of numbers of publications which can be explained by the number of years the person has been active as a researcher will not in itself be decisive for who will be considered the more qualified candidate.

In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise. A good teaching ability is i.a. shown by good results from course evaluations and evaluations after trial lectures.

Administrative expertise

Administrative expertise is also of importance for the position and will be part of the consideration. Administrative competence is shown, for instance, in the ability to plan, organise, and prioritise work in an efficient and goal-oriented manner and in the capacity to set and respect timeframes. Qualifications include overarching operational planning and the ability to manage resources in a manner that reflects the priorities of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History as well as the capacity to work in an organized way with a view to objectives and quality.

Cooperation expertise

Cooperation expertise in the shape of interaction both within the subject and with the surrounding society is important for this position and will awarded great consideration. Collaboration expertise is shown by the ability to carry on research cooperation and a good ability to interact with the surrounding society and disseminate information on their activities.

Period of employment

The appointment as assistant senior lecturer can be held for a maximum of four years. After half the employment period has passed, a guiding evaluation of the position holder’s merits is made. Employment as an assistant senior lecturer is intended to provide career development for teaching posts for which higher requirements are placed on competence. If the assistant senior lecturer is deemed suitable and meeting the requirements for promotion, upon application she/he shall be promoted and be employed for an indefinite period as a senior lecturer.

Promotion to senior lecturer

At the completion of the employment as assistant senior lecturer, the position holder is eligible to be evaluated for a position as a senior lecturer. To be qualified for such a promotion, the person holding a position as assistant senior lecturer would have planned and carried out research that in both quantity and quality shows a considerable progression. This is regardless of the position holder’s merit value at the beginning of the employment. In order to be eligible for promotion, the applicant should be established through his/her research within the research society both nationally and internationally. It is meritorious to have received funding for research in competition during their time of employment as assistant senior lecturer. Consideration will be given to the publication traditions of the subject in question. The evaluation will partly be based on the submitted research plan and whether the applicant can show that the research carried out in following this plan is of high international quality and that it has largely furthered the development of the subject.

Furthered, the applicant must have shown excellent teaching expertise by progression in teaching concerning quality, both in depth and breadth, as well as having shown the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching and other pedagogical activities on different levels and with different teaching methods. A documented ability to tie research to teaching in the subject in question is a requirement. Very good teaching ability is shown i.a. through very good results from course evaluations and appraisals from trial lectures.

Applicants for promotion should have both a very good ability to collaborate as well as the ability to fulfil the duties of the position to which the applicant aspires, and to have undergone relevant training in university teaching. Very good ability to teach in Swedish and English is another requirement.

In this recruitment of an assistant senior lecturer, the university will consider the person who through a qualitative assessment of the whole picture regarding competence and skills is considered to have the best qualifications for the implementation and development of the tasks in question, and for contributing to a positive development of both education and research in Egyptology and of the department’s activities as a whole.

The Recruitment Committee may use interviews, trial lectures and the taking of references. The applicant should therefore provide a list of reference persons who may shed light on their professional skill, as well as personal characteristics that are of significance to the position, such as ability to collaborate, leadership skills and the working methods s/he uses.

Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) that in the qualification assessment can be counted in favour of the applicant should be indicated in connection with the presentation of qualifications and experience.
