The Hugo Valentin Centre (HVC) is an interdisciplinary unit at the Department of History, Uppsala University, with a focus on research and education in two fields: first, cultural, social and political phenomena and processes of change related to the ethnic dimension of human life and, second, holocaust and genocide studies. The former involves studying minorities and ethnic relations in a broad sense, with an emphasis on migration, language and cultural revitalization, integration, discrimination, and political and social conditions in a multicultural context. The second area of research deals with the history and memory of the Holocaust, comparative analysis of genocide and other grave violations of human rights, and research on the effects of violence on individuals and society. Research is conducted in a markedly interdisciplinary research environment that brings together researchers with a background in history and philosophy, language studies and social sciences. 

Work duties
The work duties consist of research in the project The Unwanted Citizens: The Holocaust and the Aryanization of Jewish Property in Romania and the Independent State of Croatia (NDH), 1940-1945. The position requires continuous attendance at the HVC, active participation in seminars and other activities as well as ongoing presentation of the researcher’s own research. Teaching and administration can occur, but not more than 20 % of the employment.

Eligibility requirements
A PhD in history, combined with the scientific competences and skills of relevance for the subject field of the application and the tasks that should be performed. The applicant should also have knowledge about and experience with work in Romanian archival collections of importance for the project. We furthermore expect the applicant to have very good skills in oral and written Romanian and English.

Qualifications

• Documented experience with research on the Second World War in Romania, with a particular focus on Holocaust history
• Administrative experience, displayed by an ability to efficiently plan, organize and prioritize work, for instance by setting and keeping deadlines.
• Knowledge of German, Croatian, Bosnian and/or Serbian is beneficial.
• Documented ability of project management and work.
• Knowledge about the history of the Independent State of Croatia is desirable.
• Documented interest for comparative history is desirable.

• A curriculum vitae and attested copies of certificates and other documents referred to.
• A brief account of academic, teaching and other work.
• A list of up to ten academic publications. These should be ranked according to their relevance to the application. It must also be clearly stated which writings belong to the following categories: monographs, peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
• Publications cited must be uploaded to the application system in pdf format.
