Postdoctoral position in Wind Energy Meteorology

The Department of Earth Sciences offers education and research with a unique extent and is considered in international evaluations to be one of Europe's most complete geoscientific institutions. This scope is represented by experienced teachers and researchers with expertise covering everything from rocks and volcanoes, to earthquakes, weather, wind power and climate, from the development of life on earth to dinosaurs, and from lakes to glaciers, carbon storage and sustainable energy systems.

Description of the subject area:
The Wind Energy unit conducts activities within teaching, research and collaboration projects and focuses on the planning and design of wind energy and energy transition. The activities are located on Campus Gotland and today the section consist of about 20 persons. The education consists of teaching on campus and distance at basic and advanced level.

The Swedish wind resource has two distinctive main exploitation regions. One which is dominated by complex to moderately complex topography, cold climate and forested land cover, with boundary layer stratification that shows a very strong seasonality. The other region is the Baltic sea, dominated by coastal processes and advected boundary layer dynamics.

The subject areas for this position is to

·         test and improve the WRF model for Swedish conditions.

·         assist measurement campaigns.

For both focus areas, the two most important areas are forest boundary layers and coastal processes.

The research group has a long experience of running and evaluating measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer and part of the work will consist of quality control, preparation and analysis of measurements from both in situ and remote sensing instruments. Within the project, a close collaboration with researchers in mesoscale modelling located at the main campus in Uppsala is included.

The position mainly involves research but teaching can also be a part at maximum 20%.

Requirements:
To be eligible for a position as Post-doc, the applicant must hold a PhD or equivalent. The applicants PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date. The PhD can be older than three years if there are special circumstances. Such special circumstances can be periods of sick leave, parental leave etc, which are deducted from the three-year period. The requirement for this position is a PhD in meteorology or corresponding competence with experience in numerical mesoscale modelling. Experience of preforming WRF modelling is of special interest.

Ranking criteria:
In ranking eligible candidates, special importance will be given to scientific skills in relation to the subject area specified. Special weight will be given to earlier experiences in field work and using micrometeorological data. In filling this position the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.
