Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The research conducted at the Department of Physics and Astronomy encompasses a wide range of physics topics, distributed over ten divisions. The department is located in the Ångström laboratory and employs nearly 400 people, 125 of whom are doctoral students. It offers a broad physics curriculum to undergraduate and graduate students, participation in nationally and internationally leading projects for researchers, and opportunities for partnership with industry and various outreach activities.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship in astronomy and astrophysics. The PhD project is expected to focus on experimental or/and theoretical aspects of one of the research topics pursued at the Division of Astronomy and Space Physics including stellar physics and circumstellar medium, exoplanets, interaction between matter and radiation, astronomical instrumentation etc. A complete list can be found at http://www.astro.uu.se. The starting date is September 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as PhD student is limited to four years of full-time studies, or up to five years if departmental work (teaching or administration) is included.

QualificationsThis position requires a University degree in Astronomy or Physics at an advanced level (e.g. a MSc degree) completed by the time of employment. Good oral and written proficiency in English is a requirement as well as the capacity to work both independently and in a team.

Employment conditions The Doctoral student position is a 4-year appointment, and the candidate will primarily devote the time to his/her own research studies. Extension, up to a maximum of five years, is possible by including department duties at a level of at most 20%, typically teaching. The position is fully financed and the salary is in accordance with local guidelines at Uppsala University. The applicant must be eligible for Postgraduate studies at Uppsala University.
