3 Doctoral candidates in peace and conflict research, Department of Peace and Conflict Research - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. The department hosts a dynamic research milieu and is internationally oriented. Currently approx. 80 persons are employed at the Department and some 300-400 students from around the world are enrolled every academic year. We are now seeking to fill:

• One general PhD position in peace and conflict research.
  The applicant shall submit a project plan with a proposed PhD theme related to peace and conflict research.
  
  
  
• Two PhD positions in peace and conflict research with focus on international interventions and violence against civilians.
  The two PhD candidates will be part of two interrelated projects led by Associate Professor Lisa Hultman. One project (Ending Atrocities), funded by a Wallenberg Academy fellowship, examines how international interventions influence the security of civilians. The other project (The Politics of Protection), funded by a Swedish Research Council consolidator grant, explores the determinants and forms of international responses to atrocities. The PhD students are to pursue research on the causes or consequences of international intervention in relation to violence against civilians – broadly defined. This may include, but is not restricted to, the trade-offs between different forms of intervention; the complementarity of humanitarian and military efforts; coercive vs. non-coercive responses to atrocities; and the importance of norms in shaping international responses to atrocities. The successful candidates are free to define and develop their project ideas within the broad parameters of the larger projects. Work description:
PhD candidates primarily focus on their own doctoral education. A maximum of 20% of the position may involve other administrative and educational responsibilities at the Department.

Qualifications:
Employment as a PhD candidate requires acceptance into the DPCR’s PhD program, which is decided through an evaluation of the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the program. 7) writing samples (1-3 samples)

8) an indication in the web-formula of whether you apply for 1) the general position, 2) a specialized position in international intervention and violence against civilians, or 3) both the general and the specialized positions.
