Uppsala University, Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences

The Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences is an institution within
the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University. At the department there are
currently 200 employees and another 150 researchers are connected to the
department. The business consists of 11 research groups and training takes place
at all levels.

The research group of Molecular Geriatrics is located at the Rudbeck Laboratory and is closely linked to the memory clinic at the Uppsala University Hospital. Our research is focused on protein aggregation in Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The research is conducted in collaboration with other research groups internationally and in Sweden, as well as with various pharmaceutical companies.

Description of the position:

About 100 000 people live with Alzheimer's disease in Sweden today and the number will increase further as a consequence of the ageing population. Thus, there is a great need to develop new treatment methods for the disease. Currently, immunotherapy with antibodies to the amyloid beta protein is evaluated, but as new strategies for gene therapy are emerging also such treatment approaches may eventually be assessed in clinical trials.

In an ongoing project at Molecular Geriatrics, the CRISPR / Cas9 technology is used, which enables selective targeting of disease causing mutations. Within the project, recently developed protocols are being assessed on cell and animal models for the disease.

This project will mainly be conducted at Uppsala University (Rudbeck Laboratory). The holder of the position will be expected to participate in research projects aimed at evaluating gene therapeutic principles, mainly CRISPR/Cas9, on cell- and animal models of Alzheimer’s disease. In particular, the work will involve design and production of guide RNAs against various pathogenic gene variants, as well as evaluation of gene expression and biochemical / neuropathological effects in the above mentioned models. The working methods include molecular cloning, transfection of cells, transduction of neurons in living mice and histopathological examinations.

Requirements:

We welcome applications from highly motivated researchers with a PhD degree in the field of biomedicine, biotechnology, biology, pharmacy or similar. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Previous experiences in molecular biology are required.

Additional qualifications:

In addition, experience in gene editing techniques as well as in cell culturing and practical handling of laboratory animals is desired. Also, knowledge of protein analyses (ELISA, western blot and chromatography) and/or histology (including immunohistochemistry) is a merit.

Application:

The application must contain a personal letter (max 1 page) describing the applicant's research interests, current curriculum vitae (CV), with publication list, copies of diplomas for all higher degrees obtained, as well as contact information (name, email, phone number) to two referees.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
