Uppsala University, Department of ALM

In case of different interpretations of the English and Swedish versions of this announcement, the Swedish version takes precedence.

The Department of Archives, Libraries and Museums (ALM) provides second-cycle education in the Master Programme in Archive, Library and Museum Studies and, beginning in the autumn semester of 2019, a new Master Programme in Digital Humanities. Education is also provided at the doctoral level in library and information science. The department currently has some 15 teachers and researchers and six doctoral students.

Duties: This position comprises teaching, research and administration. Teaching includes course development, instruction, examination, course responsibility and course administration, as well as guidance in second- and third-cycle education. Teaching may occur in all ALM subjects, but primarily in library and information science and digital humanities, both on campus and at a distance.

The duties also involve following the developments within the ALM subjects and digital humanities, as well as other societal development which is of importance to the work at the university.

The appointment as an associate senior lecturer is intended to provide career development for teaching posts for which higher requirements are placed on competence.

Period of employment: The appointment as associate senior lecturer can be held for a maximum of four years. An associate senior lecturer can apply for promotion to senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and meets the requirements for promotion, he or she shall be promoted and be employed for an indefinite period as a senior lecturer.

Qualification requirements: A person who holds a doctorate or has achieved equivalent academic competence and meets the requirements on educational expertise is qualified for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. For this position, it is required that the applicant holds a doctoral degree in library and information science or has achieved equivalent academic competence, and applicants will primarily be considered who earned a doctoral degree or achieved the relevant competence no more than five years before the end of the application period. The applicant shall have undergone relevant training in university teaching, comprising five weeks, or be deemed to have equivalent knowledge. In the latter case, the training in university teaching can be carried out in the first two years of employment. It is a requirement that the educational expertise, the academic competence and the professional skill are relevant to the subject content of the position and the duties that are to be included in the appointment.

According to Uppsala University’s Appointment Regulations, general qualification requirements for teachers also include that they possess the personal characteristics required to perform well in the position.

The ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement.

Assessment criteria: In selecting among qualified applicants, particular importance will be given to research expertise. In reference to the nature of the appointment as a career-development position, the applicants’ research and teaching qualifications shall be assessed primarily in a qualitative respect. A quantitative advantage held by an applicant, which can be explained by the applicant having been active for a longer period of time, shall accordingly not be a deciding factor.

Research expertise: In an assessment of research expertise, research quality shall primarily be taken into account. Research expertise refers both to research qualifications and the applicant’s capacity to contribute to future development of both research and education. The research’s scope, mainly with regard to depth and breadth, shall also be assigned significance.

Educational expertise: An equal amount of care will be devoted to the review of educational expertise as to research expertise. Educational expertise refers to educational and teaching qualification and educational quality will primarily be taken into account. Scope, both breadth and depth, shall also be assigned significance. In addition, the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as the ability to link the education to research are assigned significance. Educational expertise shall be well documented so that its quality can also be assessed.

Particular value will be assigned to the applicant’s ability within teaching and research to apply a broad ALM perspective, as well as to create understanding of and knowledge about digitalisation, the organisation and production of knowledge, and the significance of digital tools in society.

Administrative and other skill is significant to the position and will be assigned considerable importance. Administrative skill is demonstrated among other things through the ability to plan, organise and prioritise the work in an effective manner adapted to the purpose and through an ability to provide and keep time frames. In addition, importance will be assigned to the capacity for interaction both within academia and with the rest of society. This skill includes overall activity planning and an ability to manage resources in a manner that reflects the activities’ priorities, as well as an ability to work in a structured manner and based on an awareness of goals and quality.

In addition to this, particular importance will be assigned to the applicant’s capacity to contribute to future development of both research and education.

When the university is to appoint new teachers, the applicants are to be selected who, through a qualitative assessment of the whole picture regarding competence and skills, are considered to have the best qualifications for the implementation and development of the tasks in question, and for contributing to a positive development of the activities.

The Recruitment Committee may use interviews, trial lectures and the taking of references. The applicant shall therefore provide a list of reference persons who can shed light on his or her professional skill, as well as personal characteristics that are of significance to the position, such as ability to collaborate, leadership skills and the working methods he or she uses.

Personal circumstances (such as parental leave, part-time work due to caring for children, union work, military service or the like) that in the qualification assessment can be counted in favour of the applicant should be indicated in connection with the presentation of qualifications and experience.

Application procedure: The complete application shall be submitted through Uppsala University’s recruitment system and include:

  • Application letter
  • Enclosures list
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Presentation of academic qualifications
  • List of publications
  • Presentation of teaching qualifications
  • Presentation of other qualifications
