Uppsala University, Department of Medicinal Chemistry

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The Department has about 85 employees and here, doctoral students, teachers, researchers and administrators work closely together in a creative and open workplace. More information about the Department can be found at the home page www.ilk.uu.se.

The research in pharmacognosy uses nature's chemistry as a source and inspiration for new drugs. We are now searching for a dedicated postdoc researcher, whom is interested in working with the chemistry and biology of peptide natural products. More information about research conducted by the Pharmacognosy research group, where you will be active, is available at http://www.ilk.uu.se/research-groups/fkog_en/.

The current project involves discovery and characterization of bioactive peptides. You will work in a research collaboration focusing on antimicrobial peptides generated from enzymatically processed animal connective tissues, as well as studying their antibiotic and immunological properties.

Duties

The work primary involves research, with limited administrational duties.

The research concerns the role of connective tissue in the immune system by generating antimicrobial peptides as a consequence of its degradation. Peptide extractions from processed tissue will be tested for activity against bacteria and fungi.  The composition of the extract will be mapped and active peptides characterized.  Mechanism of action, effect on wound healing and immune response, as well as their ability to bind bacterial toxins will be investigated, partly by external collaborations. As a postdoc you are expected to work independently and in close collaboration with experts in the field.

You will be responsible for equipment relevant to your own research and are expected to contribute actively to the research environment. There are options to supervise degree students within the project.

Qualifications

We seek someone with good knowledge of preparative chromatography and of peptide sequencing by mass spectrometry and associated bioinformatics tools. Knowledge of English at a scientific level is required.

You should have a doctoral degree within a relevant field (related to e.g. peptide or protein chemistry). The PhD degree should have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended under certain circumstances, such as prolonged periods of illness, parental leave, military service and union duties.

Emphasis will also be put on personal skills, such as the ability to work with a creative and responsive attitude, both individually and as part of a team.

Desirable / Other merit

Experience with structure determination using NMR and of peptide synthesis is advantageous.  Likewise, experience of extractions and microbiological tests is of value.

Your application should include:

  • Personal letter that concerns suitability, interest in the position and research interest
  • CV with publication list
  • Contact details of two references (email and phone)
  • Copies of diplomas and certificates

Applications should be submitted as described in this advertisement, using the university recruitment system linked at the bottom of the page.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
