Uppsala University, Disciplinary Domain of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute for Housing and Urban Research

The Institute for Housing and Urban Research (IBF) is a multidisciplinary research institute with a focus on housing and urban issues. It belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. The Institute employs a staff of about 40 people, of whom the majority are researchers and PhD students. The disciplines of social and economic geography, economics, sociology and political science each have a professorship, a senior lecturer, and at least two doctoral student positions. In addition, economic history and psychology are represented at the institute with one lectureship each. At the institute, there is a common post doc program for all disciplines.

IBF's goal is to produce interesting and relevant social research of the highest international quality within its thematic area. The different disciplines form the basis of the academic work, but interaction between them also makes important contributions to the thematically oriented research.

The Institute is home to the strategically important database GeoSweden.

Duties: Overall responsibility for research and education at the doctoral level in the subject area. This includes development of IBF's thematic area, participation in planning joint research projects as well as the position holder’s own research. Administrative and leadership assignments may occur as well. As a research institute, IBF has set high goals regarding collaboration and informing/serving the public. The duties of a professor at IBF include active participation in such activities. The position also includes work (20% of full-time) at the Department of Social and Economic Geography. This work may include teaching and supervision at the undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels. In addition, there is an opportunity to take a paid sabbatical term after a number of years of employment.

Eligibility: The eligibility criteria for employment as a professor are research as well as teaching experience (Higher Education Ordinance Ch 4 Sec 3). Furthermore, according to Uppsala University's code of employment, general eligibility requirements for teachers include having the personal qualities necessary to perform the duties of the position well. In addition, to be chosen for the position, the applicant must have demonstrated scientific competence through independent research and activities of high international and national quality.

The applicant must have demonstrated competence in planning, initiating, leading and developing research; the applicant must have demonstrated the ability to compete for and obtain research funding as well as possess well-documented skills in supervision at the doctoral level.

The applicant’s pedagogical skills must have been demonstrated through qualifications in education and teaching. In addition, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented proficiency in supervision at the undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels, and otherwise fulfill what is prescribed in University's appointment regulations (§ 33) and the Faculty of Social Sciences complementary guidelines (§ 2b).

Eligibility requirements further include professorial competence in cultural geography and research qualifications in housing and urban geography.

The ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement. If the ability to teach in Swedish is lacking, the person holding the position is expected to master this skill within a few years.

It is required that the applicant’s pedagogical skills, scientific competence and professional skills be relevant to the subject content and duties included in the position.

Assessment: As the grounds for assessment upon hiring teachers at the University, the degree of skill required for eligibility for employment shall apply. When appointing this professorship, emphasis will be placed primarily on scientific and pedagogical skills, with a special emphasis on scientific skills. However, a weighting of the grounds for assessment will be made such that an applicant who is considered pedagogically much more skilled than a scientifically somewhat more skilled applicant can be ranked higher than the latter.

When assessing scientific competence, primarily scientific quality will be taken into account. The scope of the applicant’s research, particularly with regard to its depth and breadth, will also be taken into account. In addition to good and broad anchoring in cultural geography, special importance will be attached to documented research qualifications in housing and urban geography.

The applicant's contribution to the international and national scientific community will be assessed, i.a., based on the quality and scope of scientific publication in the field’s most relevant channels of publication.

The requirements for international credentials will be assessed with regard to the character and specific prerequisites of the research area.

The applicant’s scientific skills must have been demonstrated through independent research efforts that significantly exceed, both qualitatively and quantitatively, what is required of an associate professor (docent).

The applicant must typically have supervised at least one doctoral student as a principal supervisor through the student’s public defense, unless special reasons exist.

The applicant’s ability to interact with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work will be assessed. Likewise, importance will be attached to the applicant’s ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education at the doctoral level, as well as to compete for and obtain research funding. The applicant should have demonstrated the ability to interact within the scientific field.

Equal care will be devoted to assessing the applicant’s pedagogical skills and as will be devoted to her/his scientific skills. In assessing pedagogical skills, pedagogical quality will primarily be taken into account. In addition, the scope of pedagogical experience, both breadth and depth, will be considered. Importance will also be attached to the applicant’s ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching, as well as to her/his ability to link teaching to current research in the field. See, in addition, the Faculty of Social Sciences' supplementary guidelines § 2b.

Moreover, the degree of administrative and other skills that are of importance to the position’s subject content and duties will be considered. This also applies to the applicant’s co-operation skills and competence in developing and managing operations and personnel as well as ability to contribute to synergies within and outside the institution. Experience of management responsibility, i.e., having had responsibility for a departmental environment or the like, is considered an additional qualification.

In this recruitment process, the University will primarily consider the candidate who, after an overall qualitative assessment of competence and skill, is judged to have the best ability to implement and develop the current professional duties and to contribute to the positive development of activities at the Institute. The qualifications must be documented so as to enable assessment of both quality and scope.
