Uppsala University, Department of Surgical Sciences

The Department of Surgical Sciences (IKV) is part of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. IKV has about 110 employees and several hundred associated professionals, mainly doctors and nurses in clinical practice at Uppsala University Hospital and other hospitals. Research groups from most specialities within surgery and related areas conduct research of both a clinical and preclinical nature at the department. The scope of the teaching task includes several different degree programmes and individual courses, most within the medical school, specialist nursing programmes and radiology nursing programmes.

The department is closely linked to clinical operations at the Multidisciplinary Pain Centre at Uppsala University Hospital, with a staff of about 60, is one of the most complete multidisciplinary pain clinics in Sweden and is organised according to guidelines issued by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP). Doctors from several specialities including anaesthesiology, rehabilitation medicine, psychiatry, family medicine and geriatric medicine, are on staff at the Pain Clinic. In addition, all doctors have specialist expertise in the supplementary speciality of pain management. The Pain Clinic staff also includes nurses, physiotherapists, social workers, psychologists and occupational therapists. All of the clinical components necessary to assess and treat patients with pain conditions. Also located here are the country’s only unit for inpatient rehabilitation of highly complex pain patients, close collaboration with the addiction clinic for pain patients with concurrent dependency problems and the largest neuromodulation programme in Scandinavia. A large part of the organisation is devoted to national and regional care.

The Pain Clinic has a well-established infrastructure that includes seminars and a clinical research unit with employed research nurses and bioinformatics. There is also an extensive network with pain researchers at other University departments. The Pain Clinic also has a professor of physiotherapy attached to the unit and close collaboration with a professor of psychology who specialises in pain.

Description of the subject area:

The pain research ongoing at the Pain Centre covers a broad spectrum of orientations, with profile areas in the analysis of molecular and genetic mechanisms of pain, analysis of biomarkers for better understanding of the pathophysiology of pain, neuroimaging and pain and studies of the significance of psychological and social factors for patients with pain conditions. Particularly great interest is devoted to the area of neuropathic pain.

We are now seeking a professor of clinical pain research combined with employment as a specialist physician at Uppsala University Hospital. The professor is expected to introduce and develop their own line of research within the framework of the subject area.

Duties:

As a professor of clinical pain research, you will work with teaching, research and administration. You will be responsible for teaching and supervising doctoral students and for teaching about pain at the first cycle level. In your role, you will be expected to conduct clinical and translational research and to initiate, maintain and develop collaborative research projects at the national and international levels. You will be expected to introduce your own line of research to enrich the existing research environment.

As a professor, you will also be expected to ensure that teaching meets the standards of higher education institutions and that it is further developed towards better teaching methods and effectiveness. You will participate in teaching development, administration, management and collaboration with Uppsala University Hospital and Region Uppsala. You will participate in relevant meetings at IKV and Uppsala University Hospital, as well as other collegial meetings. Your duties will include monitoring developments in your subject area and social development in other respects.

One third of the position will consist of clinical practice as a specialist physician at the Uppsala University Hospital Multidisciplinary Pain Centre.

Qualifications: A person who has demonstrated both research and teaching expertise shall be qualified for employment as a professor (Chapter 4, Section 3 Higher Education Ordinance). The applicant’s contributions to the international and national academic community must be assessed on the basis of, among other things, the quality and scope of their academic publications in publishing channels most relevant to the subject. Requirements for international merits must be assessed on the basis of the character and specific circumstances of the subject.

Teaching expertise must have been demonstrated by educational and teaching qualifications (see Section 23 AR). Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate well-documented expertise in supervision in the first, second and third cycles. A prerequisite for having demonstrated teaching expertise is that applicants have completed teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least ten weeks, or have acquired the equivalent knowledge. The assessment criteria will however be co-weighted such that an applicant assessed as having much greater teaching expertise than an applicant who has slightly greater research expertise may be ranked ahead of the latter. Clinical expertise is also significant to the position and will be assigned weight.

In assessing research expertise research quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise. See also Section 4 GA and Section 23 AR.

Clinical expertise is demonstrated through clinical work and clinical training as well as participation in clinical developmental work. Among other things, clinical developmental work involves efforts to improve or rationalise health care and medical care. See also Section 25 AR.

When the University appoints new teachers those applicants must be selected who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of their competence and expertise, are judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

Assessment criteria, other expertise: Administrative and leadership expertise are significant to the position and will be assigned weight. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to inform the public about research and development will be considered.

Leadership expertise is demonstrated through the ability to lead operations and employees, make decisions, assume responsibility and motivate and provide others with the conditions necessary to attain common goals. The ability to coordinate the group and contribute to generating commitment, participation and job satisfaction and the ability to manage conflicts are further examples of demonstrated expertise. See Section 5 GA.

According to the Appointment Regulations, administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organise and prioritise work in an efficient and task-related manner, as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities, as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality. See Section 5 GA.

According to Section 6 GA, the following apply: When assessing collaborative expertise, experience with and expertise in education and outreach, editorships and other activities related to knowledge exchange between the University and the surrounding community, as well as experience with innovation and entrepreneurship, shall be of significance.
