Uppsala University, Department of Engineering Sciences

The position is in the subject Engineering Science with specialization in the Science of Electricity, at the Ångström Laboratory, Department of Engineering Sciences, Division of Electricity.

The Department of Engineering Sciences is one of the largest institutions at Uppsala University and conducts research within a number of different technical subjects. The department has approximately 360 employees and has its activities at the Ångström Laboratory and Campus Gotland.

The division for Electricity represents Sweden’s leading research group in renewable electric energy conversion, and one of the leading groups in Ocean Energy in the world. Within the division, research activities are ongoing in several key areas of renewable energy, such as wind, wave, tidal and hydro power. The current global situation with fossil fuels as the main source of energy is unsustainable and the reason why new technologies need to be developed.

The division for Electricity has successfully deployed and operated twelve Wave energy Converters (WECs) and two marine substations with an accumulated time of operation of close to three years at the Lysekil wave energy research test site, for more information see www.teknik.uu.se/electricity. Furthermore, the WEC system developed by the division is now moving towards commercialization via the spin-off company Seabased AB who are deploying wave power farms in Sweden and abroad.

Project description: The Ph.D. project will focus on modeling and optimization of the wave energy converter. The goal of the project is to study the coupling of hydro and mechanical modeling in terms of optimizing the wave energy converter. The project involves both theoretical and experimental work. Uppsala University closely collaborates with Seabased AB that provides a good opportunity for industrial application of scientific findings. The ability for international collaboration in this project is needed. We also offer a varying and exciting work that is designed by the Ph.D. candidates together with the research team.

Duties: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%). The Ph.D. position is for four years, extendable to a maximum of five years including departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching).

  • has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements: We are seeking candidates with MSc in engineering or science. A strong motivation and ability to work independently is desirable, and good verbal and written skills in English are required. Knowledge and experience in SolidWorks, FEM and CFD methods, as well as experience in experimental work, are strongly considered merits.

Application: Applications should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. The candidates are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.
