SciLifeLab (www.scilifelab.se) is a national center for large scale and hypothesis driven research within molecular bioscience. SciLifeLab is a collaboration between four universities in Uppsala and Stockholm: Uppsala University, The Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. SciLifeLab is now recruiting two excellent research group leaders to strengthen the research within the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy in Uppsala. The current position is within Precision Medicine.

This position is part of the SciLifeLab Fellows program 2015-2019 within the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. Upon appointment the post will be placed at one of the Departments.

Description of the field
Precision medicine is one aspect of molecular medicine, which includes understanding of processes and factors behind health and disease. Precision medicine makes use of these insights to generate, analyze and interpret data that can be employed to optimize diagnostics and treatment of individual patients. Applications are found in research that centers on disease origin and progression, or equally well on molecular diagnostics and development of new strategies to treat diseases. The line of research may encompass basic method development, studies of disease models, or patient groups, as well as development of diagnostics and treatment of diseases, that gives special attention to conditions and prerequisites of the individual.

Job description
Research in precision medicine, teaching and administration. Teaching includes course management and course administration, as well as supervision of doctoral candidates. Teachers are also responsible for keeping abreast of developments in the subject areas and developments in the wider community that are significant for their teaching roles in higher education. A post as associate senior lecturer aims at providing qualifications for teaching appointments, which require higher qualifications.

Employment period
The position as associate senior lecturer is a four years career development position. On special grounds the term may be extended. The total period of employment may not, however, exceed six years. A person employed as associate senior lecturer may apply for and be tried for promotion to a position as senior lecturer for an indefinite term.

Eligibility
Eligible for a post as associate senior lecturer is, according to the higher education ordinance Ch. 4 Sect. 12a, a person who has obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent research expertise. Priority should be given to applicants who have obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence at the most seven years prior to the end of the application period. 

According to the Appointment regulations for Uppsala university (AO) § 38 teaching expertise in accordance with § 23 is required. To obtain teaching expertise, the applicant should have participated in teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least five weeks, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent knowledge. If it has not been possible to acquire this qualification prior to employment, qualifying training for teachers in higher education shall be completed during the first two years of employment.

Furthermore, according to the employment regulations, a general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well. 

To be eligible for appointment as a teacher an applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English. A person who does not have the ability to teach in Swedish may be required to obtain that ability within two years. 

Assessment
When selecting amongst eligible applicant’s weight will primarily be given to research expertise, and thereafter to teaching expertise. Special emphasis will be attached to the applicant’s potential to contribute to future development of research and teaching.

In assessing research expertise, research quality within the subject of the announcement must be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily in regard to depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead and develop research and education in the third cycle, the ability to acquire funding for research in competition, as well as the demonstrated capacity to interact with others both within academia and in the wider community. 

In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise. 

All merits should be documented so that both quality and quantity can be assessed. 

The University will give primary consideration to the applicant whom, following a qualitative holistic assessment of competence and expertise, is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations within Uppsala University and SciLifeLab.
