Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kemi - Ångström

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström laboratory conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 200 employees and has a turnover of just over 200 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs and master's programs.

Subject description: The Department of Chemistry – Ångström Laboratory (Structural and Inorganic Chemistry programs) has for many years hosted a research environment focused on the development of materials and their applications. The research is, as such, both fundamental and applied. The research focuses on how material properties are affected by chemical composition and crystal structure.

Work duties: The primary focus of the research project is the development of advanced thermal analysis equipment suitable for in situ elastic neutron scattering. The equipment will be modified and tested at Uppsala University, followed by in beam commissioning at the ISIS neutron spallation source in the UK to allow final implementation on the DREAM diffractometer at the ESS. The hired candidate will be based at Uppsala University but will be required to travel frequently to ISIS in order to perform offline and in beam commissioning experiments. The postdoc will work together with Rubotherm, as well as collaborators at HZB in Germany, ISIS in the UK and the ESS in Sweden, to finalise and realise the basic design based on the specifications set out by the project partners. They will perform offline thermal analysis experiments at Uppsala University on a wide range of test materials (hydrogen storage materials, porous frameworks etc) under simulated beam conditions and will then undertake neutron scattering experiments at ISIS on the same test materials once the equipment has been built and tested.

Requirements: For employment as postdoc, the applicant should have a PhD exam or an international equivalent within the field of Chemistry, preferably inorganic chemistry, materials science or other for the position relevant fields, within a maximum of three (3) years before the final application date. During certain circumstances, an earlier PhD can be acceptable. Certain circumstances include leave due to illness, maternity leave, in trade unions, etc.

Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in research in chemistry and physics, as well as research on sustainable energy. The ability to work both independently and in a team is essential. The candidate must have excellent capabilities in written and oral English.

Additional qualifications: Documented technical experience with setting up thermal analysis equipment, variable temperature equipment for X-ray or neutron scattering experiments, gas loading equipment and/or other diffraction instrumentation is strongly preferred. Competences regarding both X-ray and neutron diffraction is a plus as is experience of work at neutron facilities.

The application must include a CV, copies of diplomas and transcripts, publications, and a short description of your research interests. The applications will be assessed according to the following criteria: compliance with eligibility criteria, previous experience in related fields as well as personal suitability. The research group is small but highly productive with high requirements on collaborative skills.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.
