The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and distinguished biomolecular departments in Europe, comprising six research programs covering subjects such as bioinformatics, microbiology, and biophysics.
Lars Hellmans research group is working on issues related to one of our major medical challenges of today- atopic or IgE mediated allergies. This type of allergies affect between 20 and 30 % of the population in most industrialized countries, and we do not still have any good answers to the question why allergies have increased in frequency so much during the past 50-60 years. Hellmans research team aims to increase our knowledge concerning the cells and molecules that play a central role in this type of allergies and when these cells and molecules have appeared during the past 500 million years of vertebrate evolution. The project wants to identify new potential target molecules for future treatment methods and the group works with therapeutic vaccines which targeting some of the central cytokines that regulates allergic inflammation such as IL-33. An important field of the research is to present and study important groups of proteins during an allergic inflammation such as the different granule proteins which are stored in mast cells and other inflammatory cells.
We are now looking for a person to take part in the analysis of these proteases.
Duties
You will be a part of an ongoing project in Lars Hellmans research group, where we aim to obtain a deeper understanding of the origin, function and evolution of the various granule stored serine proteases which are present in the cell types of key importance for the development of atopic allergies. The main focus will be on mast cells and basophilic leukocytes. The research is focusing on the production of recombinant proteases, analysis of their cleavage specificity by the use of Phage display technology, chromogenic and recombinant substrate assays, and on construction, verification, production and purification of recombinant protein substrates. After analysis we expect the person in question to be able to analyze the results and produce publication ready illustrations in for example MS-Excel and Adobe Illustrator or similar programs.
Requirements
A PhD which includes publications within the field of Immunology. Documented scientific competence through publications i high ranking journals, with an impact factor of 2 or higher, and presentations at national and international conferences.
Documented experience, through published articles, in working with phage display analysis to study the cleavage specificity of proteases. Documented experience of molecular cloning and the production and purification of recombinant proteins in bacterial and mammalian systems. Documented experience by publications in gelanalysis in one and two dimensions (2-D gels) and experience with PCR analysis.
A requirement for the position is that you are fluent in english, oral and written, as the work is in an international environment. Great importance will be on personal skills such as ability to communicate and cooperate and ability to work independently, and in your scientific maturity and creativity.
Merits
Extensive experience in eukaryotic molecular biology, with preference for having worked on Immunological questions. Documented experience, preferable during several years, of working with handling data, analysing data and producing publication ready illustrations in programs like MS-Excel and Adobe Illustrator or similar programs.
Application has to include:
1. CV with all relevant information regarding your skills and experience as well as a complete list of publications.
2. PhD and Masters Diploma.
3. Contact information for at least one (preferably two) reference persons, whom we can contact as needed. Indicate how they are professionally linked to you (eg doctoral student supervisor).
Pay: Individual salary.
Starting: As soon as possible or as otherwise agreed.
Type of employment: Temporary position, 23 months.
