Uppsala University, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

The department of Cell and Molecular Biology is an interdisciplinary research department that performs research in the fields of structural biology, microbiology, bioinformatics and molecular evolution (http://www.icm.uu.se). Our research group studies the molecular evolution of microbial genomes using bioinformatics analyses of large-scale genomics data. The knowledge is important for our understanding of the early evolution of life and of the mechanisms and selective forces that drive adaptations to different environments. We study specific questions such as for example: which genes are required for life, how do new genes evolve and how do cell with complex internal structures originate?

Duties

The goal of this PhD-student project is to study the evolution of microbial genomes using bioinformatics methods. More specifically, the aim is to study the processes that drive the evolution larger genomes and higher levels of cellular complexity. All living organisms have traditionally been divided into two main groups based on their cellular characteristics: prokaryotes (without nucleus) and eukaryotes (with nucleus). However, a recently discovered group of organisms, called the Planctomycetes, have membrane structures that resemble those of eukaryotes, despite being prokaryotes as defined genetically. To understand how this complexity has originated, the PhD student will perform comparative genomics and bioinformatics studies. The work will be performed using the latest methods in bioinformatics and the function, stability and structure of particularly interesting new genes will then be investigated. You may also work with departmental work, such as teaching. This will constitute at most 20% of the position. Information about postgraduate education can be found at the web site of the Faculty of Science and Technology, http://www.teknat.uu.se/education/postgraduate/. Applicants must be eligible for PhD studies at Uppsala University.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a Master of Science degree in Biology with specialization in bioinformatics, microbiology or related subject areas that the employer considers equivalent.. The candidate should be able to work well as part of a team but also independently, and be proficient in both written and spoken English.

Merits

Previous experience in bioinformatics analyses of sequence data is desirable, as is prior research experience and high grades.

The application

Your application should include a letter describing research interests and relevant experiences (maximum one page), CV, copies of grades, exams, master project thesis (or parts thereof) and additional documents (such as documentation of previous bioinformatics experience). Please provide contact information to reference persons and recommendation letters from prior research supervisors.

Rules governing PhD candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
