Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper

The PhD studies will be performed in the subject electricity with focus on permanent magnet electric machines, and be located at the Division of Electricity, Department of Engineering Sciences, Ångström Laboratory.

One of the biggest challenges of our time is how to meet the energy needs of our society with fossil-free and renewable energy sources; a transformation that requires renewable energy technologies to be developed and implemented. The division of Electricity hosts one of Sweden's leading research groups in renewable energy conversion, and preforms world-leading research in, among other things, wave power, wind power, tidal power and hydropower. In the field of electrical machines, research is carried out both on generators and on electric motors for propulsion systems such as electric cars. Permanent magnet electrical machines have been studied at the department for many years.

The permanent magnets used in wind power generators and electric cars usually contain rare earth metals, which are a limited resource with a high environmental impact. Research is therefore ongoing on developing new materials that can be used as permanent magnets at Uppsala University and on other universities. This PhD project will focus on modeling novel nonlinear permanent magnet materials for use in electrical machines, as well as studying how an electrical machine with nonlinear permanent magnet materials behaves. The work has its theoretical foundation in magnetism and magnetic materials. The work will primarily be conducted using FEM simulations and verifying experiments. The project will include modeling, simulations and experiments.

The PhD student will continue on previously done work within the research group and will carry out the project in close cooperation with supervisors and other members of the group. The project is supported by the Swedish Research Council.

Work: The main duties of doctoral students are to devote themselves to their research studies which includes participating in research projects and third cycle courses. The work duties can also include teaching and other departmental duties (no more than 20%).

Admission requirements: A person meets the general admission requirements for third-cycle courses and study programmes if he or she:
has been awarded a second-cycle qualification, or has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second cycle, or has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Requirements: We are seeking a candidate with a MSc in Engineering or science, preferably with focus on electrical engineering, engineering physics, material science or similar. Experience from modelling, FEM-simulations and industry experience is considered a merit. A strong motivation and ability to work independently is desirable, and good verbal and written skills in English is required.

Application: Applications should be submitted using the link below and should include a brief description of research interests and relevant experience, a CV, copies of diplomas and certificates, thesis (or a draft thereof) and other relevant documents. The candidates are encouraged to provide letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
