Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för teknikvetenskaper

The position is at the Division of Solid State Electronics, Department of Engineering Sciences, The Angstrom Laboratory.

The research at the Division of Solid State Electronics is focused in two main areas: Electronics for Sustainable Energy and Electronics for Smart Healthcare. Specific research fields include solar cells, flexible electronics, sensors, energy-efficient RF-devices, biomedical microwave technology and thin film technologies.

Background: Rapid and accurate screening of genetic markers is essential for diagnosis of many diseases as well as for the monitoring of therapeutic success. Available molecular and mass spectrometry-based technologies such as PCR- and sequencing-based approaches, although frequently used for diagnostic purposes, are limited by the speed and affordability.

Duties: This project aims to utilize near-field methods such as förster resonance energy transfer and near-field microscopy to develop a microchip-based high throughput platform for rapid molecular identification and sequencing of genetic materials. The success of the project will lead to a general-purpose high throughput diagnostic and monitoring platform applicable to a wide range of diseases including cancer. Of the cross-disciplinary nature, the research requires close collaboration with scientists and engineers in electronics, physics, biotechnology, surface chemistry, genomics and proteomic, both within and outside the group.

Requirements: PhD in physics, biotechnology or materials science. Previous experience in optical measurements particularly single molecule/quantum dot studies, near-field optics and handling of biological materials will be advantageous. Good oral and written proficiency in English is required. Constructive and collaborative attitude is a must.

The application should include:

  • Cover letter with a brief description of previous research, research interests, and qualifications.
  • CV and list of publications.
  • Copy of degree diplomas, other official academic transcripts.
  • Names of two reference persons, along with their contact details.

Uppsala University strives to be an inclusive workplace that promotes equal opportunities and attracts qualified candidates who can contribute to the University’s excellence and diversity. We welcome applications from all sections of the community and from people of all backgrounds.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.

Starting date: January 2019.

Type of position: This researcher position is for one year with a possibility to extend for another year.
