Uppsala University, Department of Physics and Astronomy

The Division of Materials theory is known to have a world-class research environment in the ab-initio computational research on the materials properties. Besides the usage of existing state-of-the-art computational codes, a perpetual development of new methods and computational techniques is done in this department.

The PhD student will perform theoretical studies of dynamical diffraction effects and inelastic electron scattering of fast electrons on solids. The research will focus on   modern topics in transmission electron microscopy, such as electron magnetic circular dichroism, vibrational spectroscopy, phase manipulation, among others. The candidate is expected to use the existing first principles density functional codes as well as to take part in the development and implementation of new methods.

The applicant is expected to have a Masters degree in Physics, or equivalent, with a good background in solid-state physics. Previous experience with simulations of electron diffraction and/or calculations of electronic structure will be considered as an extra merit.

Application:

The application should include a statement of research interest, CV including references, certificates of exams, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis, published articles or relevant materials, if available.
