Uppsala University, Department of Organismal Biology

The Department of Organismal Biology teaches and explores the evolution, development and function of whole organisms. For more information see www.iob.uu.se

Duties/Project description: The student will be placed in the evolution and development program, under supervision of Dr. Tatjana Haitina and Prof. Per E. Ahlberg.

Establishment of vertebrate craniofacial structures like cartilages, dermal bones, tendons, ligaments, jaw joints and teeth takes place during the embryo development. This process is regulated by several transcription factors and signaling molecules.  The main aim of our project is to characterise the regulatory network of transcription factors and signaling molecules during the development and regeneration of craniofacial structures. We are describing evolutionary conserved cis-regulatory elements defining craniofacial ligaments, tendons and joints and by applying the tissue-specific ablation are studying the regeneration of these structures in zebrafish model.

Main techniques and analyses required in this project: cis-regulatory sequence analysis, Gateway cloning, generation of transgenic zebrafish lines, confocal fluorescence microscopy, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridisation, image analysis, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, micro-CT data analysis, manuscript preparation.

Requirements: A Master degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field is required. The ideal candidate is highly motivated with thorough education and strong interest in evolution and development. Written and oral proficiency in English is a prerequisite, as is knowledge of, and skills in molecular biology. Prior knowledge and experience in zebrafish husbandry, in situ hybridisation and/or bioinformatics is advantageous.

In filling this position, the university aims to recruit the person who, in the combined evaluation of competence, skills and documented qualifications, is judged most suitable to carry out and develop the work-in-hand and to contribute to a positive development of the department.

The PhD-student position is a 4-year appointment, and the candidate will primarily devote the time to his/her own research studies. Other departmental work, such as teaching or administration can be part of the position (maximum 20 %). Salary placement is in accordance with local guidelines at Uppsala University. The applicant must be eligible for PhD studies at Uppsala University.

Application:
The application should include:
1) a letter of intent describing yourself, your research interests and your experience relevant to this position
2) a CV, a copy of master degree diploma (or equivalent) and course grades
3) 2 page synopsis of the most recent discoveries in development of craniofacial tendons, ligaments and joints.
4) master thesis and contact details for at least two reference persons

Application should be written in English.

Rules governing Ph.D. candidates are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala university's rules and guidelines http://regler.uu.se/search/?hits=30&languageId=1&search-language_en=English
