Uppsala universitet, Institutionen för kemi - BMC

The Department of Chemistry – BMC is located at the Uppsala Biomedical Centre campus in Uppsala. It belongs to the Faculty of Science and Technology and conducts research in biochemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and physical chemistry.

Research is focused on issues relating to catalysis, molecular recognition and the structure and dynamics of complex molecular systems, as well as the relationship between the presence of chemical substances and biomolecules in different disease states. There is also strong research in method and technology development, including the design and synthesis of small organic molecules and biological macromolecules. Development of new biochemical and analytical methods constitute the basis for advanced studies of biological systems and their regulation, as well as how diseases can be diagnosed and treated. The researchers within the department benefit from being close to other chemists, and interact with researchers in biomedicine, pharmacy, physics and materials science. Researchers with specialist competence in biophysical methods for interaction analysis are responsible for a SciLifeLab facility, a national infrastructure for science research. The creative and research-intense environment contributes to a broad knowledge-base as well as cutting-edge expertise. In addition, Uppsala University has a well-developed innovation office that provides support for commercialization and collaboration. Read more about research in chemistry here

Uppsala University offers one of the country's best educations in chemistry, with strong links to world-leading research. A wide range of courses, excellent research connections, and extensive lab work characterizes the educational programs. Together with our colleagues at the Department of Chemistry-Ångström, we are responsible for Uppsala University's bachelor and master's programs in chemistry and, in cooperation with the pharmaceutical faculty, the Chemical Engineering program. We also contribute courses and parts of courses to other programs within and outside the faculty. Read more here

Biochemistry has a long history at Uppsala University, rooted in the research founded by the chemists The Svedberg and Arne Tiselius, both awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry and among Sweden's most internationally outstanding scientists. Read more about biochemistry here

Description of Subject Area: Biochemistry, focusing on calculations and computer simulations of biochemical systems and analytical methods.

Duties: The position includes teaching, research and administration. Teaching duties include course responsibility, course administration and supervision of second- and third-cycle students. The holder shall also keep abreast of developments within the subject area and the developments in wider community that are significant for the work at the university. A position as associate senior lecturer is intended to qualify the holder for a teaching position with higher qualification requirements.

Appointment Period: The position can be held for a maximum of four years. An associate senior lecturer can apply for promotion to senior lecturer. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and fulfills the criteria for promotion established by the Faculty Board he/she shall be promoted to and employed as senior lecturer.

Qualifications Required: According to the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance those qualified for appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer are persons who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence. It is necessary that the pedagogical skills, the research expertise and the professional skills are relevant to the content of the employment and the tasks that will be included in the employment. Applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree or achieved the equivalent competence in five years or less prior to the end of the application period will be given priority.

According to Uppsala University´s appointments regulations, teaching expertise is an eligibility requirement for appointment as an associate senior lecturer. To obtain teaching expertise, the applicant should have participated in teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least five weeks, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent competence. If it has not been possible to acquire this qualification prior to employment, qualifying training for teachers in higher education shall be completed during the first two years of employment.

A general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must possess the personal capabilities necessary to carry out fully the duties of the appointment.

Documented ability to teach in Swedish and/or English is a requirement unless special reasons prevail. The holder is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within two years.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking

Research Expertise and Teaching Expertise: The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research and teaching expertise, which will be given equal weight. Research expertise comprises research merits as well as the applicant´s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and teaching. In assessing research expertise, special weight will be attached to research merits in computational biochemistry, comprehensive calculations and computer simulations of biochemical systems and analytical methods. Experience in using statistical calculation methods and regression analysis for experimental design and analysis of data will also be a merit. Because it is desirable that you work in an area with great development potential, your own research plans in the area will be of great importance. The ability to interact with researchers within the biochemistry program and to develop current research strategies will also be of great importance, as well as the ability to develop your research with available infrastructure. Weight will also be attributed to extensive international research experience, ability to collaborate widely and internationally, as well as obtaining external research funding within the area of the service. Applying good research practice and ethics of research ethics are absolute requirements.

As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of research expertise. Teaching expertise comprises educational and teaching qualifications. In assessing teaching expertise teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. In assessing teaching expertise special weight will be attached to the experience of different types of teaching (eg laboratory work, lessons and lectures) as well as experience of teaching at different levels of undergraduate education. Weight will also be added to course management, and experience in the development of education at the undergraduate and / or advanced level. Since teaching can be given in both Swedish and English, very good knowledge in both Swedish and English will be of great importance.

Administrative Expertise: Administrative expertise is important for the employment and will be afforded consideration. Administrative expertise also includes entrepreneurship. Administrative expertise is demonstrated, for example, through the capacity to plan, organize, and prioritize work in an efficient and task-related manner as well as through the ability to assign and observe time frames. Expertise includes overall operational planning and the capacity to manage resources in a way that reflects operational priorities as well as the ability to work in a structured manner based on an awareness of goals and quality.

Management Expertise: Management expertise is important and will be afforded consideration. Management expertise is demonstrated through the capacity to lead operations and personnel, make decisions, take responsibility, and motivate others, providing them with what is needed for the efficient achievement of common goals. The abilities to coordinate the group and help create a sense of involvement, participation, and enjoyment in work and to deal with conflicts constitute further examples of demonstrated expertise.

Other Expertise: Personal capabilities will be afforded consideration. This position includes supervision of doctoral students and leading a work group, therefore personal capability to lead, support and enthuse is important. We want the person who receives the position to conduct cutting edge research and have the ability to receive external funding, therefor you need to be driven and be able to express and market yourself, analytical chemistry, the department and the university well. We collaborate in smaller groups within and outside the department, therefor your skills in collaboration with different people on all levels will be considered.

All merits must be documented in a manner that makes it possible to assess both quality and scope.

In filling this position the University aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise is judged to have the best potential to carry out and develop the relevant duties and to help advance operations.

In an overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience.
