The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The department has about 280 employees, including 120 senior faculty and 110 PhD students. More than 4000 students are enrolled annually. The post-doctoral position is offered by the Division of Computer Systems, which is one of five divisions of the department. For more information, see www.it.uu.se.

Subject area: UpCERG (Uppsala Computing Education Research Group) has been active in discipline based education research for over 20 years and is an internationally well recognised group that uses a broad range of theories, tools and methods to address a wide range of educational challenges from multiple viewpoints in computing and engineering. With the announced position we aim to strengthen work regarding aspects, such as identity, culture, motivation, and behaviours, that influence learning in computing and engineering. The learning areas of interest to UpCERG are broad. They include mastering “core” computing subjects, like programming, as well as developing professional competencies in a wider sense, such as the ability to function in a heterogeneous international team. The learning cohort is a vital factor in our research and is not limited to university level students: other learners such as pre-school children, elementary and high-school students, as well as life-long learners are also of interest.

Duties: The position includes research and a limited amount (max 20%) of teaching.

Appointment period: The position will be held for two years and can start as soon as
possible.

Qualifications required: Candidates should have a Doctoral Degree (PhD or equivalent) in Computing Education Research, or a similar topic with documented work in the area of Computing Education Research, at most three years before the application deadline (this time will be extended for medical leave, parental leave, etc.). High-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals or conferences are expected. The applicant should be highly motivated, able to work well in a diverse group, comfortable giving and receiving constructive criticism, and have strong abilities for critical thinking and structured work.
These competencies are as important as the technical qualifications. Excellent skills in
spoken and written English are an absolute requirement.

Assessment Criteria/Ranking; The ranking of eligible applicants will be based primarily on research expertise. In filling this position the University aims to appoint the applicant who, following a qualitative holistic assessment of her/his competence and expertise is judged to have the best potential to carry out the relevant duties and to contribute to the advancement
of research at the Division of Computer Systems.

In the overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, parental leave, part-time work relating to care of children, union assignments, military service, or the like are to be regarded as work experience, and should be listed as merits in the application.

Application: The application should include a statement (at most 2 pages) of the applicant’s motivation for applying for this position, including the applicant’s qualifications and research interests and a description of the applicant’s PhD thesis. The application must include a CV, degrees and grades (translated to English or Swedish), a web reference to the PhD thesis, a complete list of publications with up to five important publications for the position highlighted and the candidate’s own contributions to those five publication described, other relevant documents, and the earliest possible starting date.
