The Department of Medical Cell Biology at Uppsala University is a strong and international research environment. The department has more than 110 employees, of which about 25 are doctoral students, 10 postdoctoral fellows, and 40 researchers, teachers and professors.
The research group of Professor Mia Phillipson is offering a 4-years funded PhD Student position in endometrial immunophysiology. The team is an international, dynamic and very successful research group with a well-established collaborative network and strong funding. The conducted research is aiming to uncover novel roles of immune cells and to find means to regulate their specific functions in settings spanning from organ development and regulation of homeostasis to tissue healing, angiogenesis and inflammation. The laboratory is equipped with or have access to advanced technical tools and technologies.

Duties
The unique ability of the human endometrium to undergo monthly menstrual cycles of proliferation, differentiation, breakdown, shedding and scar-less repair is fundamental to mammalian life. Circulating and fluctuating ovarian hormones are known to regulate the menstrual cycle, but the involved self-renewing mechanisms and cellular contributions within the stem cell niches are largely unknown. In fact, the localization and characteristics of endometrial stem cells still remains to be defined, as does the functions of the immune cells, which at times constitute up to 70% of the endometrial cellularity. Based on our previous findings of immune cells including neutrophils and macrophages being important for repairing injured tissues, we now want to investigate what these cells do during the endometrial injury-repair process with specific focus on their interactions with the stem cell niche. The overarching goal with this research is to generate knowledge that can be used for the development of treatments of abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and endometriosis.
This is a full-time, four years position. Other tasks at the Department might include teaching undergraduate students as well as administration (max 20%), which will prolong the total time of employment to the same extent.
