Uppsala University, Department of Women's and Children's Health

Postdoctoral position in medical technology with a focus on digital methods for image-based diagnostics

The Department of Women's and Children's Health (KBH) is an international and multi-professional department that focuses on health and welfare. The global health perspective is always present, and we collaborate across professions and clinical areas, within both education and research.

Do you want to work with medical diagnostics based on artificial intelligence (AI), supported by competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer who invests in a sustainable workforce and offers safe, favorable working conditions? Welcome to apply for employment as a Postdoctoral fellow at Uppsala University. You will work specifically with research related to digital diagnostics and where the overall goals are to study new methods that can make medical diagnostics more accurate, efficient and accessible.

We are now looking for a postdoc for research on deep learning for image-based diagnostics.

The service is part of a joint collaboration between the two largest research programs in Sweden, Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) and SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), with the ultimate goal of solving groundbreaking research questions across disciplines.

Duties
The field of medical technology has developed strongly in recent years, especially in areas such as mobile health, medical AI and digital diagnostics. In medical specialties such as pathology and microbiology, samples of human cells and tissues are increasingly digitized and thus become available for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to detect and classify disease states. The research group has developed an AI-based diagnostic system with high accuracy for screening of cervical cancer at the point-of-care in resource-limited environments. The system is compact, portable and easy to use and requires minimal infrastructure to detect atypical cervical cells in Pap smears.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you are expected to take on a great deal of responsibility within a research project related to cancer diagnostics. Your task is to develop the interface between the AI-based diagnostic system and the expert who makes the final diagnosis.

The project has significant potential by enabling more accurate, efficient and accessible diagnostics. While the project focuses on resource-limited environments, the AI-based method is equally applicable in medium- and high-resource countries, where the system can provide faster and more accurate diagnostics. The recipient of the position is expected to coordinate the research project together with the group leader, help with the application for ethical permission and funding as well as with the recruitment of other researchers within the project. The task also includes the establishment of interdisciplinary research networks involving other departments at Uppsala University and other academic institutions, nationally and internationally, in the field of digital diagnostics. You will be active in a multidisciplinary team together with several experts with different backgrounds in both technology and medicine working towards the same goal.

Requirements
You have completed a master's degree with a focus on medical imaging and informatics (master's degree in technology), as well as a doctorate in computerized image processing or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to said doctorate. You have a strong interest in machine learning and image analysis. Previous experience with deep learning and its adaptation to microscopy is a requirement. Good knowledge of the programming language Python and the frameworks PyTorch and MATLAB is a requirement, and knowledge of the programming language C++ is an advantage. Experience in the development of systems for human and machine interaction is seen as a strong merit. Good communication skills, ability to write scientific text and expertise in software development are essential. Ability to present results clearly, collaborate as part of a team as well as independently and with a good eye for detail is also necessary. Excellent written and oral skills in English are a requirement.

The degree must be completed by the time of starting date at the latest. Primarily, it should come into question who has completed the degree no more than three years ago. When calculating the framework period of three years, the starting point is the application deadline. If there are special reasons, such a degree may have been completed earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, positions of trust within trade unions, etc.

Even applicants who have not completed their doctoral degree at the end of the application period can apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) employment date. This must be confirmed by the applicant's main supervisor, director of studies or equivalent.
