Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

A position as a postdoctoral researcher in tropical forest ecology is available at the Department of Ecology and Genetics, Plant Ecology and Evolution.

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to studies of ecosystems. For more information, see www.ieg.uu.se.

Project description: The specific research project is somewhat flexible to the specific interests of the successful applicant and will be developed collaboratively, but it will generally contribute to our overall research program, which focuses on the consequences of environmental heterogeneity on tropical forest biodiversity, at various spatial and temporal scales. In particular, ongoing projects involve tropical forest dynamics, functional ecology, and responses of forest communities to natural and anthropogenic disturbance. An extensive amount of existing data is available from our primary study sites – which span a climate gradient in Puerto Rico – including long-term tree demographic rates, species distributions, functional traits (including physiological and wood anatomical traits), and remote sensing (including high-resolution hyperspectral and lidar data). The project may involve fieldwork to collect new data and it is also possible to leverage data from other sites. There are opportunities to become involved with our collaborative network, including via the Luquillo Long-Term Ecological Research site. Read more about our group and see our publications on the research group website: bobmuscarella.weebly.com.

Duties: Conduct innovative research in tropical forest ecology, generate manuscripts suitable for publication peer-review journals, actively participate in the intellectual atmosphere in the research group and department.

Qualifications required: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctoral researcher you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in a relevant field. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. The successful applicant will have prior experience working and publishing on trait-based ecology of tropical forests, as well as synthesizing large datasets for quantitative analyses in R. We attach great importance to personal qualities such as strong ability to communicate and work well in a team environment. Candidates must be able to express themselves fluently in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired: Prior experience with statistical analyses involving demographic vital rates, species distribution modeling, and trait-based community ecology is highly advantageous.  Strong background in tropical forest ecology, both from theoretical and practical perspectives, is extremely important.

Salary: Individual salary.

Starting date: 2022-04-01, or as agreed.

Type of employment: Temporary position for 24 months, with a possibility to an extension up to a maximum of 36 months, according to central collective agreement.
