The Department of Statistics has about 30 employees, whereof about 10 PhD students. Our main research areas are causal inference, econometrics/time series analysis, high dimensional multivariate linear models, and structural equation modelling.

IFAU - The Institute for Evaluation of Labour Market and Education Policy is a research institute situated in Uppsala. IFAU is a dynamic academic environment at the frontline of labor and applied economic research. IFAU conduct research within our fields of research, i.e., labor market policy, the functioning of labor markets, education policy and the labor market effects of social insurances. The Department of Statistics and IFAU are looking for a PhD student in Statistics which can perform high quality methodological statistical research within the field of Causal Inference in Observational Studies with applications in labor economics.

Starting date: 23 August 2021 or according to agreement.

Position description: The position is at the Department of Statistics in collaboration with IFAU. The aim is research in statistical method development and applied econometrics related to the research fields at IFAU.

The position is within the projects Development of statistical methods for analyzing causal effects with population-based register data. (led by Ingeborg Waernbaum at the Department of Statistics and IFAU) and How to design policies to improve youth labour market entrance? Evaluation of unemployment insurance and labour market programs over the business cycle (led by Johan Vikström at IFAU). The former project is devoted to the development of new statistical methods for analyzing causal effects using population-based register data and the latter is devoted to applied research in labor economics.

Duties/Project description: The duties of a PhD student are primarily directed at his/her own research education, which lasts four years. The work may also involve, to a limited extent (maximum 20%) other departmental duties, mainly related to teaching undergraduate courses – in which case the position may be extended to a maximum of five years.

Local guidelines for the salary of PhD students apply for employed doctoral students.

The PhD program in Statistics includes 240 credits, 90 credits of courses and a dissertation of 150 credits.

Requirements: For admission to the PhD program in Statistics, an applicant must have basic and specific eligibility prescribed by the Faculty of Social Sciences. Anyone with a degree on the advanced level (i.e. a master’s degree), that has completed course requirements of at least 240 credits (including at least 60 credits at advanced level) has fulfilled the basic entry requirements. The master’s degree can be in statistics, economics or another discipline.

The specific eligibility requirements for admission to the PhD program in Statistics require that the applicant has passed courses of 90 credits in statistics. Anyone that in any other way, in or out of the country, has acquired equivalent knowledge is also considered to fulfil the basic or specific eligibility requirements, respectively. Information about eligibility requirements and admission rules can be found on the web site of the University, Admissions Ordinance for Studies at the Graduate Level. The candidate should also have a good command of spoken and written English.
