Postdoctoral position in computational biochemistry

- at the department of Cell and molecular biology

Uppsala University is an international research university focused on the development of science and education. Our most important assets are all the individuals who with their curiosity and their dedication make Uppsala University one of Sweden’s most exciting work places. Uppsala University has 40,000 students, 7,000 employees and a turnover of SEK 6,5 billion.

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology is one of the most international, broad and distinguished molecular bioscience departments in Europe. Research areas range between cell biology and biophysics.

The advertised position is available in the group of Professor Johan Åqvist at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology. Johan Åqvist leads a computational biochemistry group focusing on computer simulations of enzyme reactions, ligand binding and protein stability. Please see http://www.icm.uu.se/cbbi/aqvist-lab/ for more information about the research group.

The postdoc will work within the multidisciplinary project “Evolution of new genes and proteins”, financed by the Wallenberg foundation, with the aim to understand how structure and function are intertwined in the evolution of new proteins. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology at Uppsala University.

Job description

The postdoc will work on projects aiming to understand how structure and function are intertwined in the evolution of new proteins and in the adaptation of proteins to new conditions, especially extreme environments with regard to temperature, pressure, salinity etc. The work will involve computer simulations of enzyme reactions, ligand binding and protein stability, as well as software development and bioinformatics analysis of protein structure.

Qualifications required

We are looking for a motivated postdoc with a Ph.D. in computational chemistry, structural biology, biophysics or related area. Documented experience of computational chemistry and structural biology is required, as well as scientific skills demonstrated through publications and presentations at national and international conferences. The project involves collaboration between different disciplines and interpersonal skills are therefore essential. In ranking qualified applicants, personal skills such as ability to communicate, collaborate and work independently, as well as scientific maturity and creativity, will be considered particularly important. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are an absolute requirement as the working environment is international.

The applicant’s Ph.D. degree should have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application date; periods of sick leave or parental leave are deduced from the three-year period.

Other meritorious skills

Experience from molecular dynamics simulations, modelling of enzyme reactions and structural bioinformatics.

The application should be written in English and include:

  • Letter of motivation with a short description of your research interests and qualifications for the project (maximum one page).
  • CV with full publication list.
  • Copy of degree diploma and other official transcripts.
  • Names, e-mail addresses and telephone numbers to at least two reference persons. Please indicate your professional relations to these (e.g., doctoral supervisor).

In filling the position, special weight will be given to scientific skills, independence and collaborative abilities, which will be judged via references and interview.

Salary: Individually negotiated salary.

Starting date: As soon as possible or otherwise agreed on.

Type of position: Time limited employment of two years.
