The Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University conducts education at the undergraduate, advanced and doctoral levels, as well as research and has operations in two locations, in Uppsala and in Visby. The postdoctor position is located at Campus Gotland in Visby within the research program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU). At Campus Gotland, NRHU research focuses on, among other things, fisheries, nature-based tourism, ecosystem services and coastal zone management. NRHU is responsible for courses in the bachelor program in Environmental Science and the master program in Sustainable Destination Development at Campus Gotland. Duties/Project description: The position as a postdoc is part of the transdisciplinary project Sustainable fisheries and coastal zone planning on Gotland. The focus of the project is aquatic environments, fisheries, and strategies for management of the coastal zone. Some of the key words in the project are coastal habitats and associated fish as well as strong sustainable development. A transdisciplinary approach is the foundation of the project. The project is a collaboration project between Uppsala University and the County Administrative Board of Gotland and a development of the project Protecting seagrass around Gotland.

Coastal areas are popular and we humans often have a major impact on the coastal zone and this has large effects on coastal environment. The coastal zone with its many different habitats provides high biodiversity, including many species that normally live out at sea. The coast is also an important resource for business and recreation. We know relatively little about Gotland's 770 km long coastline in terms of biodiversity but there are ongoing projects to map the shallow coastal environment in terms of both habitat and fish.

The focus area for the project is Gotland, an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The candidate should be interested in research that is beneficial for sustainable management of fisheries and coastal zone around Gotland, and other regions, with a focus on fish in shallow coastal environments and especially bottom vegetation. Links between habitat, fish and fishing, including sport fishing, are of great importance in the project. Fish stock assessments for primary target species in sport fishing is included. The postdoc will plan and participate in data collection as well as design and conduct analyzes. The candidate is expected to produce high-quality scientific papers suitable for publication in high-profile journals and for presentation at national and international conferences. The research results are also expected to contribute information that develops management of fisheries and the coastal zone in general. The position may also include teaching to a maximum of 20% of the duties.

Requirements: To qualify for an employment as a postdoctor you must have a PhD degree or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in environmental science/ecology/ natural resource management/marine biology. The PhD degree must have been obtained no more than three years prior to the application deadline. The three year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc. Very good spoken and written English skills are required.

Additional qualifications: Knowledge and/or experience of work on issues related to fish, fishing, connectivity and management of the coastal zone are particular merits. Practical experience of field work in the Baltic Sea, GIS, questionnaires and/or interview methodology are merits. An interest in statistics and analytical ability is desirable. Proven creativity and ability to take own initiative as well as the ability to work transdisciplinary are merits.

When selecting among qualified applicants, emphasis will be placed on scientific skill in relation to the duties. The University will after an overall assessment of documented qualifications, competences and skills, consider the candidate that has the best qualifications to carry out and develop current work tasks and support a positive development of the department.
