Uppsala University, Department of Ecology and Genetics

The Department of Ecology and Genetics is an international environment with staff and students from all over the world. Our research spans from evolutionary ecology and genetics to ecosystem studies. Learn more at https://www.uu.se/en/department/ecology-and-genetics .

The limnology program includes 3 major, highly interactive and collaboration research groups: microbial ecology, population and community ecology and biogeochemistry. See https://www.uu.se/en/department/ecology-and-genetics/research/limnology

We are now looking for a PhD student in Microbial ecology to the program Limnology

Project description
The project is focusing on photoheterotrophy and its importance for the role of microorganisms in lake ecosystems. Photoheterotrophy is an understudied process in lake ecosystems, and more knowledge can lead to a changed view of the role of bacteria and archaea in, for example, the carbon cycle. The PhD student will work in a project financed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet).

Duties
PhD studies will include field studies and experimental studies both in field and in the laboratory. The student shall also apply methods for microbiological, chemical and genetic analysis. Further, the studies include analyses of the collected data using statistical methods and bioinformatics analyses of metagenomic datasets, as well as course work and publication of scientific articles.

Qualifications required
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in Limnology, Ecology, or related fields
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

The successful candidate must have a good knowledge of Microbial ecology.

We attach great importance to personal qualities such as independence and teamwork skills. Candidates must be able to express themselves very well in spoken as well as written English.

Qualifications desired
The ideal candidate has previous experience in conducting lab and field experiments and with molecular methods to characterize microbial communities. Further, knowledge of statistics and bioinformatics, especially using metagenomics data, is desired.
