The research of the Natural Resources and Sustainable Development Program within the department focuses on the different dimensions of sustainable development. We consider the environment and its natural resources and ecosystem services as an overarching foundation for society and economy and aim at providing knowledge on how to utilize natural resources in a sustainable way. Our work involves considerations of both natural and social systems and their interactions, often adopting transdisciplinary approaches.

The PhD student position is located in Uppsala within the research program Natural Resources and Sustainable Development. The focus is placed on Climate Governance.

Duties: The PhD position is part of the new research program FAIRTRANS, Fair Transformations to a Fossil Free Future, which is a collaboration between five Swedish universities and about a dozen civil society organisations, funded by Mistra in 2021-2025. FAIRTRANS aims to develop science-based and fair roadmaps for rapid decarbonisation, consistent with a Swedish carbon budget, through collaboration with key actors in civil society. FAIRTRANS is divided into six work packages. The PhD position will foremost be linked to a set of tasks focusing on climate governance for transformation and on conflict reconciliation.

The work of the PhD candidate will in particular concern barriers, drivers and transformative avenues and strategies in climate governance and policy, as well as strategies for reconciling bioenergy conflicts. The work is of qualitative nature and will be conducted in close collaboration with researchers and partners in FAIRTRANS. The PhD candidate is expected to help organising and coordinating activities in which stakeholders take part, including to moderate stakeholder and citizen roundtables. The candidate is also expected contribute to communication and other outreach activities.

Requirements: The applicant shall have a university science degree (MSc) in environmental sciences, sustainable development, political sciences or similar, alternatively have at least a MSc degree or similar combined with work experiences concerning environmental governance and policy. Good language skills in both Swedish and English are required. 

Additional qualifications: Skills or experiences in policy-making, civil society, transdisciplinary research, organisation of dialogue processes, interviews and interview methods, or public communication are advantageous.

Salary: According to local agreement for PhD students.
