PhD-student position in Microbiology with focus on investigation of microbiota for understanding spatial patterns in malaria mosquitoes - Hiring in process/Finished, not possible to apply

This PhD position will be in the groups of Olle Terenius and Staffan Svärd.

General description: The groups’ research focuses on how insects move in nature based on knowledge of their microbiota, something we call Insect CSI. By obtaining a unique microbial profile of thousands of bacterial sequences from each insect, we get information about its life history including where it comes from. Specifically, this project concerns malaria mosquitoes in different parts of Africa where knowledge of the mosquitoes’ lives and movement patterns will have a major impact on how to fight malaria. You will also be involved in analyses of the microbiota in humans and animals infected by the intestinal parasite Giardia intestinalis.

Duties: The Ph.D. student will primarily focus on postgraduate studies where bioinformatics analyzes of microbiome data will form the main activity together with DNA extraction and PCR. Other duties related to teaching and administrative work may be involved, up to a maximum of 20% of the time. Requirements: The applicant must have a master’s degree in biology or biotechnology with a focus on molecular biology, bioinformatics, biotechnology or microbiology. You must be highly motivated in your studies and your research and have a good ability to work independently. You should have a great interest in driving the development of the research as our group is the first in the world to systematically use microbiota as a basis for spatial analysis of insects. The applicant must have a good ability to work independently as well as in a group. A prerequisite is good written and oral knowledge of English, as the work takes place in an international environment.

Additional qualifications:

• Previously documented experience of bioinformatics analyzes of microbiomes or microbiota
• An ability to teach in Swedish.
